Major airlines such as TAM SA and GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes will only be able to run flights within a 1000-kilometer (621-mile) radius of the Congonhas airport and won't be able to run connecting flights from the airport. The TAM airlines Airbus-320 was en route to Sao Paulo from Porto Alegre in southern Brazil on Tuesday when it skidded on the rain-slicked runway in Sao Paulo, barreled across a busy road and slammed into a gas station and TAM building. 199 people were killed. The crash highlighted the dangers of running large jets at the small urban airport and led authorities to look at the excessive use of Congonhas. The 1000-kilometer (621-mile) radius will allow airlines to fly to key destinations such as Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and cities in southern Brazil, but not the northeastern region, where several tourists destinations are located. TAM and GOL previously used Congonhas as a major hub.
