Steve began his career at local club Altona East Phoenix. He made his way to Heidelberg United in the National Soccer League in 1994-95 season. Heidelberg were relegated to the Victorian Premier League that year where they finished 2nd to Altona Magic. They made it to the grand final that year but lost to the Magic on penalties.

Steve transferred to South Melbourne FC the next year where he stayed for most of his career. He was a part of South Melbourne's FIFA Club World Cup squad in Brazil in 2000.
