Southampton Football Club is an English football team, nicknamed The Saints, based in the city of Southampton, Hampshire. The club gained promotion to the Championship from League One in the 2010 � 2011 season after being relegated in 2009. Their home ground is the St Mary's Stadium, where the club moved to in 2001 from The Dell. Southampton have played in red and white stripes for the majority of their history, but to celebrate their 125th anniversary the club has reverted to its original red sash design. The club has won the FA Cup once, and their highest-ever league finish was second in the top flight in 1983 � 84. On 8 July 2009 the club was purchased by German-born Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr. He died on 10 August 2010. On 12 September 2010, Nigel Adkins was appointed the new manager on a three year deal. |
