Lower Silesian language or simply Silesian (Lower Silesian: Schläsch/Schläsche Sproache, ), is a German dialect/language spoken in Lower Silesia. Today, the area is mainly in southwestern Poland, but as well as in northeastern Czech Republic and in eastern Germany. The group of dialects is nearly extinct. This language is not to be confused with the Slavic Silesian language, a language spoken today by some of the inhabitants of Polish and Czech part of Upper Silesia. The German Silesian is part of the East Central German language area with some West Slavic influences. After the expulsion of the Germans from Silesia, German Silesian culture and language nearly died out when most of Silesia became part of Poland in 1945. After World War II, Polish authorities banned the use of the German language altogether . |
