A town in Halton Region, on Lake Ontario in Southern Ontario, Canada, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area. Oakville's first industries included shipbuilding, timber shipment, and wheat farming. In the 1850s, there was an economic recession and the foundry, the most important industry in town, was closed. Basket-making became a major industry in the town, and the Grand Trunk Railway was built through it. The town eventually became industrialized with the opening of Petro Canada and Shell Canada oil refineries (both now closed), the Procor factory, and, most importantly, the Ford Motor Company's Canadian headquarters and plant, all close to the Canadian National Railway and the Queen Elizabeth Way highway between Toronto and Fort Erie (Buffalo). In 1962 the town of Oakville merged with its neighbouring villages to become the new Town of Oakville, reaching northwards to Steeles Avenue in Milton. In 1973, the restructuring of Halton County into Halton Region brought the northern border southwards to just north of Highway 407.

Carbon Capture and Storage technology, or CCS, has been identified as one of the most promising technologies to make a significant contribution to worldwide efforts to mitigate climate change by reducing emissions from large industrial facilities. Shell's proposed Carbon Capture and Storage Project, called Quest, will capture more than one million tonnes of CO2 per year from the Scotford Upgrader in Alberta, Canada and store it deep underground, beneath several layers of impermeable rock layers. The Quest Project will be the first CCS Project to be implemented at an oil sands upgrading operation. View this short video to find out more about how the Quest Project will safely and permanently store CO2 underground and provide valuable knowledge that will help to advance further deployment of this technology in Alberta, Canada and around the world. For more information on Quest visit: www.shell.ca To read more about Shell's response to the challenge of meeting rising energy demands while managing CO2 emissions visit: www.shell.com

Greenpeace activists call this a crime scene. Twenty-five demonstrators occupied these oil sands in northern Alberta, in Canada on Tuesday — unfurling banners and chaining themselves to equipment. The activists from Canada, the US and France forced the company to temporarily suspend production at the 155000 barrel a day site. A Greenpeace spokesman said open pit mining operations replace natural forests with a landscape of toxic lakes. But he labeled Shell's Albian Sands site as the worst offender. [Mike Hudema, Spokesman, Greenpeace Canada]: "The tar sands are the largest industrial project on the face of the planet. They emit more emissions than entire countries. By 2020, they'll emit more emissions than the entire Czech Republic, twice as much as Peru, and over 10 times that of Costa Rica. At a time when we are in a global climate crisis, when over 300000 people will die this year because of climate change, a million more will become climate refugees. A project like this simply can't go on." Shell says it is improving its environmental performance by developing a carbon capture and storage project for its oil sands operations. After getting its message across, Greenpeace ended the protest peacefully on Wednesday.
