Bolkan graduated from South Salem High School in Salem, Oregon in 2004, where he was a McDonald’s High School All American soccer player. He then attended Stanford University, playing on the men’s soccer team from 2004 to 2007. He graduated in spring 2008 with a bachelors degree in biology.

In 2005, Bolkan played during the collegiate off-season with the Cascade Surge of the fourth division Premier Development League. In 2007, he played for the Westchester Flames of the PDL. On April 9, 2008, the Los Angeles Galaxy signed Bolkan to a developmental contract and sent him on loan to the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division.

Bolkan made his professional debut on 10 June 2008, in the Timbers' shock loss to Hollywood United in the first round of the US Open Cup. In 2008 he also played several games for Galaxy's reserve team, but never played for the first team.

On 15 November 2008, Bolkan announced his retirement from professional soccer.
