Rabindranath Tagore (-hnsrə.ʋɪn̪.d̪rə.n̪aːtʰ, Bengali: [ʈha.kur ro.bin̪.d̪rɔ.natʰ]; , Robindronath Ţhakur) (7 May 1861 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and playwright who reshaped Bengali literature and music. As author of Gitanjali with its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he was the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1913). His poetry in translation was viewed as spiritual, and this together with his mesmerizing persona gave him a prophet-like aura in the west. His "elegant prose and magical poetry" still remain largely unknown outside the confines of Bengal.

A Pirali Brahmin from Kolkata, Tagore was already writing poems since he was eight years old. At age 16, he published his first substantial poetry under the pseudonym Bhanushingho ("Sun Lion") and wrote his first short stories and dramas in 1877. Tagore achieved further note when he denounced the British Raj and supported Indian independence. His efforts endure in his vast canon and in the institution he founded, Visva-Bharati University.

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to political and personal topics. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and contemplation. Tagore was perhaps the only litterateur who penned anthems of two countries - Jana Gana Mana, the Indian national anthem and Amar Shonar Bangla, the Bangladeshi national anthem.

Tagore Song by Arnob. Arnob is a young Bangladeshi musician; initially was known as a member of folk-rock-fusion band "Bangla" (started in 1998); later gained widespread popularity for his solo career as singer, composer and music director. Arnob graduated in Fine Arts from Santiniketan (university founded by Rabindranath Tagore), India. [ Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Bengali renaissance figure; a mentor of undivided Bengal. He was a music composer, poet, novelist, playwright, artist, activist and a philosopher. Tagore became Asia's first Nobel laureate by winning the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is the only person in the world whose three different songs were chosen as national anthems for three different countries--for India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. * ] * Note: Many people do not know, even the Wikipedia does not have this information that Sri Lankan national anthem "Sri Lanka Matha" was originally composed and written in Bengali language by Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore's Sri Lankan student Ananda Samarakoon requested Tagore to write & compose a song for his country. Later Samarakoon translated the song into Sinhala language. Indian National Anthem "Jana Gana Mana" was translated from Bengali to Hindi by Tagore himself. And the tune of Bangladeshi national anthem "Amar Shonar Bangla" was originally a very old folk (Ba-ul) song by Gagan Harkara. Tagore recomposed the song and rewrote the lyrics.

A memorable scene from Satyajit Ray's "Charulata" which is an adaption of "Nastanirh" by Rabindranath Tagore. In this scene the main character, Charu, sings Tagore's song, "Fule Fule Dhole Dhole."

Jana Gana Mana (Bengali: à¦à¦¨ à¦à¦£ মন Jôno Gôno Mono) is the national anthem of India. Written in highly Sanskritized Bengali, it is the first of five stanzas of a Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It was first sung at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress,on 27 December 1911. Jana Gana Mana was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem on January 24, 1950.[1][2][3] The music for the "current version" is said to be derived from a composition for the song by Ram Singh Thakur, although some dispute this. A formal rendition of the national anthem takes about forty-eight to fifty-two seconds. A shortened version consisting of the first and last lines (and taking about 20 seconds to play) is also staged occasionally. Rabindranath Tagore also composed the music for another Indian poem Vande Mataram.
