RWTH Aachen University is a research university located in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany with roughly 33,000 students enrolled in 101 study programs.

RWTH Aachen has achieved international recognition in several fields of engineering and science, especially mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, computer science, physics, and chemistry. In a 2010 report, Wirtschaftswoche and Handelsblatt ranked RWTH Aachen the first in Germany in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and industrial engineering as well as the second in computer science. RWTH Aachen also stood on top among universities in Germany in the aforementioned fields of engineering and computer science in CHE University Ranking 2010 published by DAAD. The university is affiliated with a number of internationally noted scientists, including Nobel laureates in physics and chemistry.

RWTH Aachen is a founding member of IDEA League, a strategic alliance of five leading universities of technology in Europe. The university is also a member of TU9, DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and the Top Industrial Managers for Europe network. The university maintains close links to industry and accounts for the highest amount of third-party funds of all German universities in both absolute and relative terms per faculty member.

In 2007, in the line of the excellence initiative, RWTH Aachen was chosen by DFG as one of nine German Universities of Excellence for its future concept RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges and additionally won funding for one graduate school and three clusters of excellence.

Walk around the Physics Centre (Physikzentrum) of Aachen University, with spoken explanations of what you're seeing. That Centre was my second home for a few years because I pursued both my diploma thesis and my PhD thesis there.

Several of these buildings form part of my history. The personnel department resides in the Backsteinbau, so I had a file there during my time as a PhD student. In the Sammelbau, I had to hand in linear algebra homework in my first semester and handed in my PhD thesis at the end of my studies. In the seminar building, I received many calculus and physics homework problems. Rogowski building was home of the beginners' physics lab course. And Karman auditorium was the scene of many lectures - and many written exams. You need large halls for exams because only every third seat in every second row is occupied. If anyone had told me at the beginning of my arduous studies that I would be driving around this area with a Mercedes-Benz A one day, I would have told him off for making such a sick joke. (Now that car is expensive only at first sight, but this pays for itself quickly because this is a typical second car for women, which makes it a lot less expensive to insure than cars that are typically driven by 18-year-olds.)
