Putnam County is the smallest county of the U.S. state of Illinois (in terms of area). As of 2000, the population is 6,086. The county was formed in 1825 out of Fulton County. It is named after Israel Putnam , who was a general in the American Revolution. The county seat is Hennepin, Illinois .

Putnam County is part of the Ottawa - Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.
