:Not to be confused with the Port of Melbourne.Port Melbourne is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 5 km southwest of Melbourne's central business district. Its Local Government areas are the cities of Port Phillip and Melbourne. At the 2006 Census, Port Melbourne had a population of 13,293.

The suburb is bordered by the shore of Hobsons Bay and the lower reaches of the Yarra River. Port Melbourne covers a large area which includes the distinct localities of Fishermans Bend, Garden City and Beacon Cove.

The area to the north of the West Gate Freeway is in the City of Melbourne. The area to the south is in the City of Port Phillip.

Historically it was known as Sandridge and developed as the city's second port, linked to the nearby Melbourne CBD.

The formerly industrial Port Melbourne has been subject to intense urban renewal over the past decade. As a result, Port Melbourne is a diverse and historic area, featuring industrial and port areas along the Yarra to open parklands, bayside beaches, exclusive apartments and Bay Street's restaurants and cafes. The suburb also forms a major transport link from east to west, home to one end of the West Gate Bridge.

Presenting the scuttled wreck of HMVS Cerberus at Black Rock in Melbourne, Australia. ADDITIONAL INFO: Launched in England in 1868, the ship was commissioned in 1870 to protect the Australian colony of Victoria. It was named HMVS (Her Majesty's Victorian Ship) Cerberus after the 3-headed dog that protects Hades in Greek mythology. The vessel was the first 'ironclad' warship in the British Navy to be driven solely by steam power. It sported two turrets with two guns in each, and patrolled the water of Port Phillip. After federation in 1901, the ship was incorporated into the Commonwealth Naval Force and then into the Royal Australian Navy in 1911. It was renamed HMAS Platypus II in 1921, and supported Australia's J-Class submarines as a depot ship. In 1926, it was purchased and scuttled by municipal authorities for use as a breakwater. Today, it is extensively corroded, but is accessible to divers. It is also viewable from Black Rock Pier and the cliffs that overlook Half-Moon Bay. The ship's anchor has been preserved and is located at HMAS Cerberus naval base, while its turret guns are still with the vessel. Presenting Oliver's Hill at Frankston in Melbourne, Australia. ** Best viewed in 480p. ** ADDITIONAL INFO: Named after James Oliver - a fisherman who built his cottage on top of the hill; the hill was later to accommodate many homes including that of Australian TV personality Graham Kennedy (1934 - 2005). With inspiring views of Frankston & Port Phillip, it has been treating travelers along Nepean Highway for many years. It has also been the subject for many artists, with the most prominent being Melbourne's own Frederick McCubbin (1855 - 1917). COPYRIGHT © 2009 77Aussie. I ♥ Frankston.

Arthur's Seat in Melbourne, Australia - named by John Murray, who was the first European to enter Port Phillip Bay in 1802 on the Lady Nelson. Born in Scotland, he thought the hill resembled a similar landmark in his hometown of Edinburgh. Later in the same year, Matthew Flinders was to climb its slopes. A track was first constructed in 1896 and a graded road was added in 1929. Today, Arthur's Seat road is popular with day trippers, and its many turns and scenic views makes for an enjoyable and interesting run.

Located at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne, Australia; heavily fortified in the late 1800s, it proved crucial in defence during the first and second world wars. Presenting HMAS Otama at Crib Point in Melbourne, Australia. ADDITIONAL INFO: Not to be confused with Osama or Obama (*joke*), the HMAS Otama was commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1978, and was decommissioned in 2000. The last of 6 Oberon class submarines to be built for the RAN, its cost at the time of building was $10 million (AUS). Since 2000, it has been owned by a community group who had the intention of preserving and presenting it as a museum ship - red tape has prevented this. In 2008, the submarine was listed on Ebay, and the asking price was $4.9 million (AUS). While several parties expressed an interest, including a suspected drug smuggler, the vessel did not sell. It is presently docked in Western Port, and its fate is still undecided. It can be viewed from the beach, which is accessed via a short walk from the main road. An information centre has also been established by the Western Port Oberon Association (WPOA). REFERENCES: - en.wikipedia.org - HMAS Otama information board. THIS VIDEO IS COPYRIGHT © 2010 77AUSSIE.
