Beginning in the late 19th/early 20th century, as a small village in the locality of Llanfrechfa Upper, Pontnewydd has grown rapidly since the start of the Cwmbran New Town development in 1949. Locally, it is known as 'The Village'. Pontnewydd has its main commercial centre along Commercial Street, Richmond Road, New Street & Chapel Street. Pontnewydd is split into many sub-districts; North Pontnewydd Estates (mostly pre-war apart from Pen-y-parc, which was built around 1980). Five Locks Estate (built around 1990) that runs along the canal side next to Pontnewydd Golf Course. Lowlands (built in the 1970s), a slightly low-income area of Pontnewydd that surrounds the recreation grounds and canal. South Pontnewydd Estates (1960s-80s), the quieter area which bases Pontnewydd School, Holy Trinity Church & Churchwood. |
