The Petronas Towers (also known as the Petronas Twin Towers) are skyscrapers and twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to the CTBUH's official definition and ranking, they were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 until surpassed by Taipei 101, but remain the tallest twin buildings in the world. The building is the landmark of Kuala Lumpur with nearby Kuala Lumpur Tower.

Malaysian police squashed a demonstration Wednesday near the venue of the East Asia Summit, detaining six opposition activists protesting human rights abuses at home as well as in Myanmar and Thailand. Police briefly scuffled with a handful of activists and snatched their banners before they could be unfurled in a small park, about 100 meters (yards) from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (near the Petronas Twin Towers) where Asian leaders were meeting. Uniformed police also took away plastic boxes containing pamphlets denouncing the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which held summit meetings on Monday and Tuesday before hosting the East Asia Summit with six other countries on Wednesday. "ASEAN leaders have sat for two days and discussed nothing on human rights," said Tian Chua, one of the six people detained, before he was led away. "Today ASEAN has proved itself to be a club of dictators who refuse to listen to any form of criticism from its people," said Tian, spokesman for Malaysian opposition People's Justice Party. The party had planned a public demonstration to protest against ASEAN's failure to secure the freedom of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to bring about democracy in that military-ruled country. They also were protesting against alleged human rights abuses in Malaysia and in Thailand's southern provinces where the government is battling an Islamic insurgency. Among those arrested were two women, one of whom was dragged to ...

Im in Kuala Lumpur for three days on business and so time to squeeze in the local landmarks. The first stop on any sightseeing expedition here has to be the dramatic Petronas Twin Towers, one of the most famous skyscrapers in the world and very handily less than a ten minute walk from the guest house where I am staying for a couple of nights. Its acres of steel shine in the daytime sunlight and are floodlit spectacularly at night meaning that you can see the towers from almost anywhere in the city; they are the focal point that the city's hub revolves around. To get to them a map is barely necessary, you just point in their direction and they guide you. When it opened in 1998 the Petronas Twin Towers, with 88 floors, was the tallest building in the world, a few metres higher than the famous Empire State Building. The skyscraper certainly did its job: it put the city on the global map and turned state petroleum company, Petronas, into a household name. Six years later Tapei 101 took over its mantle as it was just over 50 metres higher, and since then the Sears/Willis Tower in Chicago arrived on the skyscraper scene it is almost equally as tall before the 160 floor Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which has just officially opened, shattered the established order with an unmatchable height of 828 metres. However for sheer visual appeal and global recognition, the Petronas Twin Towers, already immortalized in a Hollywood movie, is arguably still the most famous skyscraper in the world ...
