In medicine, pathology is the study and diagnosis of disease. The related scientific study of disease processes is called "general pathology". Medical pathology is divided into two main branches, anatomical pathology and clinical pathology. Medical pathologists work through examination of organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and whole bodies (autopsies).

The term "pathology" has a broader meaning in the sciences to refer to the study of disorders, not specifically in the domain of biology. For example in psychology, the term "psychopathology", or simply "pathology," considers disorders within its domain (mental, emotional and behavioral) to be forms of "illness" or "disease."

Veterinary pathology is concerned with animal disease, whereas phytopathology is the study of plant diseases.

The word pathology is from Greek , pathos, "feeling, suffering"; and , -logia. Pathologization, to pathologize, refers to the process of defining a condition or behavior as pathological.
