Top Pics of Ootacamund - "Nilgiris - Very Big Bison" by Indianature from a blog titled "The Nilgiris - Return to Paradise" Excerpt: "For the last few years, our annual winter vacation -- pilgrimage almost, has been to the Nilgiris. This years trip was unsure due to various reasons. Fortunately everything worked out, and we were able to spend a rejuvenating ten days by the pristine lakes, forests, mountains and grasslands of the south Nilgiris. This year, the weather pattern all over India has been most peculiar. The Nilgiris were no exception with extended monsoons leading to landslides and serious disruption in the Ooty and Coonoor areas. Our part of the Nilgiris was by and large, unaffected. We took the usual route with our faithful Coimbatore driver Jagadeesan via Mulli, Geddai and Manjur to Avalanche. This quiet, beautiful ghat road with numerous hairpin bends, is now a regular route to Ooty as the main Mettupalayam Coonoor road is under repair. Even so, there was hardly any traffic on our way up. The recent rains and warmer climate had resulted in a profusion of wildflowers of various hues, a delightful bonanza for plant lovers like us. Many, we had never seen before. Usually by mid December, most wildflowers in these high altitudes succumb to ground frost. See my wildflower ...

Entry from: Ootacamund, India Entry Title: "The Overwhelming Ooty" Entry: "Ooty is enriched with dense forest, cool climate and scenic panoramic beauty. Thats is how i describe it when i saw glimpses of Ooty in Tamil movies but being there personally means so much more. We embarked our journey from Mysore and took the route through the Bandipur National Park Reserves and encountered deers, elephants & forest bulls. I was told by the driver that it was a risky path to travel down the national park as wild elephants do attack passing vehicles and cause damages to properties and lost of lives. I was advised not to use my camera flash as it might invite unwanted danger. Our driver would stop if he sees an elephant closeby. There was a lone elephant which was a few hundred metres away from the main road. I only manage to zoom out from far to get a shot from the camera which was satisfactory and away we whiz off. I had to go back to sleep at this point because we left Mysore at 6:00 AM. I felt a little chilly when i woke up. We were passing through the tea plantations going uphill. Stopped for some hot tea and a toilet break for me by the bushes and cursed alot due to the relief from it. I took some shots of the hills along the way and scurry up hill until we came to a stop, Hotel Sunshine Inn. It was ...

Entry from: Ootacamund, India Entry Title: "The Beauty of Ooty" Entry: "We've left the Western Ghats behind and we're now in the Nilgiris. Ooty is pretty special at this time of year because the climate is soooo nice. The days are sunny and warm (about 26) and the evenings are a little chilly, jackets needed & 4 blankets on the bed! It's an old Colonial hillstation built by the British to escape the heat in the days of the Raj. We took a taxi from Kalpetta approx. 130ks. The journey was spectacular up through mountains, tea, coffee, eucalyptus & bananas. We crossed the border into Tamil Nadu which is immediately more colourful with bright Hindu temples along the roadside next to the patchwork of tea plants. We stayed at the YWCA which is great. A big sprawling place with lots of different style rooms, bungalows or dorms. Our room is massive and has been freshly painted & it's very nice & homely. There are some very English looking communal lounges with chintzy curtains, embroidered table cloths & side boards with the best china out. There's even a piano in the upstairs lounge. Fireplaces too but it's not cold enough at the moment for them to be lit. We caught up with Kat & Charlotte briefly but then waved them bye bye as they headed off on the bus to Mysore and to explore Norther India & Nepal. Au ...
