North Carolina's 2nd congressional district is located in the central and eastern parts of the state. Today, the district, which is represented by Congressman Bob Etheridge, includes all or parts of Chatham, Cumberland, Franklin, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Nash, Sampson, Vance, and Wake counties.

In the nineteenth century, the district was known as "The Black Second," because it elected all four of North Carolina's Republican African-American congressmen from that era (ending with George H. White). Before the creation of the black-majority 1st district and 12th district in the 1990s, the 2nd district was roughly 40% black, then the highest percentage of black residents of any congressional district in North Carolina.
