The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) ( ) is a New Zealand Crown entity tasked with promoting safe and functional transport by land, including the responsibility for driver and vehicle licensing and investigating rail accidents. It was created on 1 August 2008 by the Land Transport Management Amendment Act 2008, merging Transit New Zealand with Land Transport New Zealand. Its legal name, as established by the Act, is New Zealand Transport Agency, but it operates as NZ Transport Agency.

The initial NZTA Board was criticised by the National Party opposition in July 2008 as being "stacked" with New Zealand Labour Party political appointees.

Taxi driver Allan Smith, who was behind the wheel when the law last changed in 1977, said the campaign should be launched a month earlier than the planned March 25 date. "The perspective of it then was that these were major changes and people would get fouled up with the whole change of the law," Smith said. "I don't think it'll be a smooth transition this time. There is a lot more traffic on the roads." But NZTA said the risk of introducing the campaign too early was that drivers may think the changes come into effect earlier than the official date. "This rule changes at 5am on Sunday the 25th of March and until then the existing rules comply ...
