The earthquake struck just before the close of Tokyo stock trading, sending the benchmark Nikkei 225 index tumbling 1.7pc to a 5-week low. Other Asian stock markets reacted badly with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropping 1.8pc and South Korea's Kospi sliding 1.3pc. Asian shares had been down earlier with higher-that-expected inflation data in China, jitters over eurozone debts after Moody's downgraded Spain, and unrest in Saudi Arabia weighing on sentiment. In London, the FTSE 100 dropped at the open on Friday, with insurers such as Royal & Sun Alliance and Aviva down a couple of percent as investors remain risk averse. The index was down 0.3pc - or 15 points - at 5829.53. The index is now below where is started the year and is on track for its worst weekly performance in eight months. The 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami was an 8.9-magnitude earthquake and resultant tsunami waves.[31] It was measured at 7 on the JMA seismic intensity scale, while the Japan Meteorological Agency's tsunami warning listed the magnitude as 8.4.[32][33] It was located off the east coast of Tohoku, Japan on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 05 UTC at a depth of 32 km (20 ...

[Naoto Kan, Japanese Prime Minister]: "To all the people of Japan, as you have seen on TV and heard on the radio, today at 14:46 there was a massive earthquake that hit with a magnitude of 8.2." The quake was later verified to have a magnitude of 8.9 by the US Geological Survey. It caused many injuries, sparked fires and the wall of water, prompting warnings to people to move to higher ground in coastal areas. [Unidentified]: "I just came out immediately." At least 22 people have been killed in the quake and tsunami, according to the Kyodo news agency. The extent of the destruction, and the forecast for the tsunami, suggested the death toll could rise significantly. [Yukio Edano, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan]: "I wanted to tell you that currently, we are assuming that there is devastating damage, and the government is doing all we can to rescue and to prevent further damage." From BBC News: A mammoth relief mission is swinging into action in north-east Japan, a day after it was struck by a devastating tsunami, claiming hundreds of lives. The disaster was triggered by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, the country's most powerful since records began. Japan's military has mobilised thousands of troops, hundreds of planes and dozens of ships. The government has warned there could be a radioactive leak at a nuclear power reactor shut down by the quake. The tremor struck in the afternoon local time on Friday at a depth of about 24km, 400km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo. It was nearly 8000 times stronger than the one which devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month, scientists said. About 300 people are known to have died and more than 500 are missing. Japanese media says the death toll will exceed 1000. Prime Minister Naoto Kan plans to hold an emergency cabinet meeting early on Saturday, before visiting the disaster zone by helicopter. The country's military has mobilised thousands of troops, 300 planes and 40 ships for the relief effort. US President Barack Obama said a US aircraft carrier was already in Japan, and another was on the way. The quake triggered a tsunami up to 10m (30ft), with waves of 7m battering the Japanese coast. A muddy torrent of water swept cars and homes far inland, turning residential areas and paddy fields into a lagoon of debris-filled sea water. One of the worst-hit areas was the port city of Sendai, in Miyagi ...

Map of Japan Tsunami waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, officials said. Japan's NHK television showed a massive surge of debris-filled water sweeping away buildings, cars and ships and reaching far inland. The earthquake also triggered a number of fires, including one at an oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, engulfing storage tanks. There were reports of about 20 people injured in Tokyo after the roof of a hall collapsed onto a graduation ceremony. Bullet train service to northern Japan was halted, rapid transit in Tokyo was suspended and some nuclear power plants automatically shut down.
