Multiracial Americans, US residents who identify themselves as of "two or more races", were numbered at around 9 million, or 2.9% of the population, in the census of 2010. However there is considerable evidence that the real number is far higher. Prior to the mid-20th century many people hid their multiracial heritage. Consequently many Americans today are multi-racial without knowing it.

Since the 1967 Supreme Court decision that deemed anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional, there has been a considerable increase in the number of interracial couples and mixed-race children. Until 1989, children continued to be classified as belonging to the race of the non-white parent, reflecting historical hypodescent laws. Since the 1980s, the United States has had a growing multiracial identity movement, culminating in the 2000 census, which for the first time presented the opportunity to self-identify as multiracial, and the election of Barack Obama, the first President of the United States with an acknowledged multiracial background, in November 2008.

Complete video at: fora.tv Political scientist Jane Junn examines shifting views on racial categorization in the United States. Junn notes the increasingly common use of the "Multiracial" designation on the US Census, and discusses what it may mean for American society. ----- Barack Obama's success so far in the 2008 election cycle has fostered optimistic rhetoric in mainstream media about race relations in the United States. But does Obama's candidacy transform Martin Luther King Jr.'s American dream into a reality? A recent New York Times/CBS poll found that Americans are sharply divided by race on their views of Senator Obama and the state of race relations. In addition, with an increased presence of other minority groups, issues regarding race in political and social life are no longer black and white. What role does race play in the 2008 election and beyond? Can America ever truly be a color-blind society? - The Century Foundation Jane Junn is Associate Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University. She holds a joint appointment with the Eagleton Institute of Politics. She received her AB from the University of Michigan, and her MA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her primary interests are political participation and elections in the US, political behavior and attitudes among American minorities and immigrants, theories of democracy, survey research, and social science methodology. This video was the result of a group project by University of Washington and Waseda University students for a class about Japan's Changing Generations during Winter Quarter 2009. Interviews were conducted with Japanese and American students (from UW and Waseda U) to see if the election of Barack Obama as the first multiracial president had changed the way they thought about race, ethnicity and identity, and to also hear their thoughts about what race relations in Japan and the USA will be like in the future. Over the course of eight months, sixty-four women representing a cross-section of cultures (Indigenous, African-American, Arab, Asian, European-American, Jewish, Latina, and Multiracial) came together to share their experience of racism in America. With uncommon courage, the women speak their hearts and minds about resistance, love, assimilation, standards of beauty, power, school experiences, and more. Their candid conversations offer rare access into multi- dimensional worlds invisible to outsiders. The abundance of photographs, dance, and music provides a sensual richness to this seminal documentary. For more information visit world-trust.org

View interview here: bit.ly "If the world saw me as African American, then that was something I needn't run away from, that's something that I could go ahead and embrace. I'm less interested in how we label ourselves, I'm more interested in how we treat each other. And if we're treating each other right, then I can be African American, I can be multiracial, I can be, you name it. What matters is, am I showing people respect, am I caring for other people." Obama also went on to say how Blacks as a race are "mixed up": "We are sort of a mongrel people. I mean, we're all kinds of mixed up," Obama said. "That's actually true of white people as well, but we just know more about it."

There are so many within the African-American community who disregard (or worse) those whose origins are "multiracial/multiethnic" in nature, and yet are among the very first and the very loudest to parade the very same people they would normally voice their disapproval of as shining examples of "Black Excellence" whenever such multiracials achieve something great & positive. The time is way overdue to shine the spotlight on these "Black Power" phonies and expose them for the shameless hypocrites they are.
