Mount Kinabalu ( ) is a prominent mountain on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is located in the east Malaysian state of Sabah and is protected as Kinabalu National Park, a World Heritage Site. Kinabalu is the tallest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range and is the 4th tallest mountain in the Malay Archipelago after Indonesian Papua's Puncak Jaya, Puncak Trikora and Puncak Mandala. Mount Kinabalu is also the 20th tallest mountain in the world by topographic prominence.

In 1997, a re-survey using satellite technology established its summit (known as Low’s Peak) height at 4095 m (13435 ft) above sea level, which is some 6 m (19.7 ft) less than the previously thought and hitherto published figure of 4101 m (13454.7 ft).The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, with over 4500 species of plant, 326 species of birds, and 100 mammalian species identified. Among this rich collection of wildlife are famous species such as the gigantic Rafflesia plants and the orangutan. Mount Kinabalu has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status.

The main peak of the mountain (Low's Peak) can be climbed quite easily by a person in peak physical condition. If not fit enough, though, the climb can be very hard despite there being no need for mountaineering equipment at any point on the main route. Other peaks along the massif, however, require rock climbing skills.

Mount Kinabalu is found in sabah, borneo, part of malaysia. It is the highest Mountain in South East Asia at 4095 Metres (13435 feet). It is a tough climb and harsh on the knees but worth it. It takes two days to climb but most of that is spent resting at a cabin half way up. Actual climbing time is around 11 hours (from base to summit and back). Go to poring hot springs afterwards to relax those aching muscles and get a stick at the top of Kinabalu, to help you descend without killing your knees for weeks!! You can buy clothing at the markets in sandakan or in kota kinabalu. gloves recommended plus at least 2-3 layers and a waterproof plus hat and gloves. take a head-torch too. Weather conditions are very variable but its worth the climb when you get to he top!

During the Ice Age, glacier running though the summit plateau, smoothed it out but the jagged peaks that stood out above the ice surface, remained unaffected by these 'cosmetic' touches and retained their extremely ragged surfaces. This rugged mountain 4093 meters above the sea level, and still imperceptible of the National Park. More video clips & photos at www.asiavalley.com - Your Colourful Destination.
