Motley County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 1,426. It is named for Junius William Mottley, an aide to General Thomas Jefferson Rusk and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Mottley died in 1836 in the Battle of San Jacinto. Mottley's name is spelled incorrectly because the bill establishing the county misspelled his name. Motley County is one of thirty prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas. Its seat is Matador .
