Mineral Wells is a city in Palo Pinto County, Texas and a portion of Parker County, Texas. The population was 16,946 at the 2000 census. The city is named for mineral springs in the area, which were highly popular in the early 1900s. Mineral Wells is most famous for its Baker Hotel.

In 1952, Mineral Wells was the host of the Republican state convention in which delegates divided between presidential candidates Dwight D. Eisenhower and Robert A. Taft. Though state chairman Orville Bullington of Wichita Falls led the Taft forces, the convention vote ultimately went 33-5 in favor of Eisenhower, who was threafter nominated and elected.

Mineral Wells was the birthplace and principal place of residence of Chet Upham, chairman of the Texas Republican Party from 1979-1983 and founder of Upham Oil and Gas Company in Mineral Wells and the Loveland Ski Area in Colorado.

Mineral Wells, Texas Video

The Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas, opened in 1929 lavishing guests with high style and mineral water with amazing healing powers. Guests including Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe performed in the 'Cloud Room' at the top of the hotel. The hotel closed in the early 1970's leaving many memories echoing in the halls of this grand hotel...many folks think there is more here than just memories. What do you think?

For the latest developments on the documentary "Ballad of the Baker" check out www.bakerhotelmovie.com Hailing from Mineral Wells, I jumped at the gracious invite to tag along with the current restoration team to tour the Baker Hotel - not wanting to waste a moment I grabbed my little video camera to capture this amazing and architecturally significant building that I haven't been inside in over 20 years... Underlit and obviously hand-held, the footage actually turned out better than I had expected (it was very very dark); therefore, I decided to quickly edit an "overview" of what we saw on the tour (using a consumer-grade editing program, sorry no bells and whistles!). I owe Mike and Mark of HHCC Plumbing Construction a huge thank you, as well as all the participants there that day. Here's to bringing the ol' gal back!
