:For history regarding merit badge types, see History of merit badges (Boy Scouts of America).

Merit badges are awards earned by youth members of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), based on activities within an area of study by completing a list of periodically updated requirements. The purpose of the merit badge program is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or avocation. Originally, the program also introduced Scouts to the life skills of contacting an adult they hadn't met before, arranging a meeting and then demonstrating their skills, similar to a job or college interview. Increasingly, though, merit badges are earned in a class setting at troop meetings and summer camps.

Each merit badge has a pamphlet (booklet) published by the Boy Scouts of America associated with it; the pamphlet contains information on completing the requirements for the badge. Scouts are designated merit badge counselors for each badge, and a Scout would meet with a counselor to demonstrate that he's completed the requirements. The counselor would then 'sign off' on each one.

The award of a merit badge is represented by circular patch with an image representing the badge's topic. The patches for the Eagle-required merit badges are distinguishable by the silver ring on the outside edge. Merit badges are displayed on a sash which can be worn with the Boy Scout uniform on formal occasions.

Every year the National Council reviews and updates a certain number of merit badges. Most recently, the Inventing, Geocaching, and Scouting Heritage Merit badges were introduced in 2010. The Robotics merit badge is the newest merit badge released April 2011.

Scouting organizations in other countries issue or have issued merit badges, including Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Austria has a program similar to merit badges for certain age groups.

Boy Scouts can finish merit badges they started at summer camp during the Eagle Scout Association's Merit Badge Make-Up Day. The annual event is held during the second Saturday in August at Beaumont Scout Reservation in High Ridge, Mo. The event is attended each year by hundreds of Scouts who typically complete approximately 500 merit badges that were started at Greater St. Louis Area Council summer camps.

Every scout troop will sooner or later have the boy that just doesn't quite fit the mold. In this video, Chase's scouting experience as a boy with high-function autism provides valuable insights for scouting peers and leaders alike that will help them provide a successful scouting experience for each boy. This video is also a great resource for the Disabilities Awareness merit badge.

On Saturday, February 19, Wichita Area Technical College hosted the 7th annual Merit Badge College. This is the 7th year the Quivira Council Boy Scouts have partnered with WATC for the merit badge college. The all day event gave Scouts the opportunity to earn up to two merit badges in one day. Faculty, staff, and area professionals volunteered to instruct Scouts in approximately 20 different categories ranging from Art, to Fish and Wildlife Management, to Engineering. I just got back from BSA National Camp School -- I was in an Outdoor Skills Director section. One of the things I did this past week, in my spare time, was requirement #7 for the Pioneering merit badge (to build a scale model of a signal tower or monkey bridge). I was challenged to build more than a monkey bridge, so I built a tower and added a sloping monkey bridge on the back side. It's built in a 1"-1' scale, one inch to 1 foot scale. Technically, I built a signal tower and added more onto it. Why build both? Well, a tower is larger, far more complex -- it requires a lot more work. Even so, I haven't seen Scouts lining up to climb up and down on a tower unless they're playing some sort of game with it. I've seen Scouts queuing up for a monkey bridge several times, so I wanted to build something that was both technically complex and would also draw attention and be something that Scouts would really want to climb up and cross. It has 43 lashings -- 30 square lashings, 1 sheer lashing, 10 diagonal lashings, 2 platform lashings, and 39 separate knots for the hand/foot and anchor ropes. I used just under 300 inches of twine, roughly 24 1/2 feet of twine (which would be just under 300 feet of rope in real life), and about 15 feet of dowels (which would be about 180 feet in real life).

When I was at the Boy Scout National jamboree, I created this short film for cinematography merit badge with some other scouts. Unfortunately they only use windows movie maker, so I got home and had my friend over and edited the video using the far superior Imovie. I really don't care about the overall quality of this video, because We all had fun making and editing this video.
