Mehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur city in Rajasthan state is one of the largest forts in India.

The fort is situated 400 feet (122 m) above the city, and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort.

There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory') built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention even today.

The museum in the Mehrangarh fort is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. In one section of the fort museum there is a selection of old royal palanquins, including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin, which was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730. The museum exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms.

Jodhpur is a hot and bustling trading town located on the fringe of the Great Thar Desert. It has been an important trading town for centuries and is a center for incense and spices. It became rich and powerful from the sale of opium and sandalwood as well as controlling a vital route on the subcontinent. Maharajas poured their wealth into art and architecture and built one of the mightiest forts in the world, Mehrangarh Fort. Originally built in 1459, it completely dominates the city below. Scaling the walls is not an option as they are hundreds of feet tall and unbelievably thick. Inside the fort is a series of courtyards, arcades, and palace apartments. The Raj and Mugal architecture is incredibly opulent. The rooms where the Maharaja would give an audience are richly decorated and have posh floor pillows, silver lined fans and umbrellas. Women were excluded from any meetings or official gatherings but had secrete balconies and screened walls from which they could spy on the proceedings.

Mehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur city, is one of the largest forts in India. The fort is situated on a lofty height, 400 feet (122 metres) above the city, and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its ways, there are several palaces, which are known for their intricate carvings and sprawling courtyards. The foundation of the fort was laid on May 12, 1459 by Rao Jodha on a rocky hill nine kilometres to the south of Mandore. The invincible fortifications are six meters thick. Some of the walls still bear cannon marks they had once withstood. The Chamunda Mataji was Rao Jodha's favourite goddess, he brought her idol from the old capital of Mandore in 1460 and installed her in Mehrangarh. She remains the Maharaja's and the royal family's Isht Devi or adopted goddess and is worshipped by most of Jodhpur's citizens as well. Crowds throng Mehrangarh during the Dussehra celebrations. It contains period rooms like Moti Mahal - The Pearl Palace, Sheesha Mahal - The Hall of Mirrors, Phool Mahal - The Palace of Flowers, Takhat Vilas -Maharaja Takhat Singh's Chamber.

Jodhpur, the 'Blue City' is one of the most amazing spots in India. While the city overall is a dusty and noisy shithole, the old quarter is an amazing, calm and magical spot. Towering above it is the Jodhpur Fort, aka Mehrangarh Fort, the largest and possibly the awesomest fort in all of India. Maintained in phenomenal condition, full of amazing stuff, and kitted out with one of the BEST audio tours I have ever heard, this fort is a must-do even if your mom has cancer and you need to fly home. Seriously. Amazing. The audio tour is so well put together, I decided to let it take you on todays tour instead of the annoying buzz-buzzzz-buzzzz of my voice. Enjoy.
