The Maltese Premier League, known as BOV Premier League for sponsorship reasons (colloquially known as Il-Kampjonat, Il-Lig, or Il-Premjer), is the top level league for football in Malta. The league was first competed in 1909. In the Maltese football system, there are three divisions under the Premier League, they are; the First, Second and Third divisions.

Prior to 1980, the top level of the Maltese Football League was known as the First Division; however, it was renamed the Premier League and has stayed so since, with the First Division (formerly known as the Second Division) one level lower.

The 10 participating teams in 2009 10 were:

Birkirkara F.C., Floriana F.C., Hamrun Spartans F.C., Hibernians F.C., Marsaxlokk F.C., Msida Saint-Joseph F.C., Qormi F.C., Sliema Wanderers, Tarxien Rainbows F.C., and Valletta F.C.

Sliema Wanderers had six foreign players in their squad with Brazilian striker Jackson Lima, their latest signing, awarded a starting role along with Hungarian goalkeeper Viktor Szentpeteri, Ivory Coast defender Sekou Tidiane Souare and Nigerian forward Obinna Obiefule. The Blues went close early on when Clayton Failla hit a strong shot that Birkirkara goalkeeper Ezequiel Lovizon pushed away for a corner. From the ensuing corner, Failla's cross was met by Josef Mifsud whose header was cleared off the line by Trevor Cilia. Birkirkara's troubles increased on seven minutes when Lovizon was stretchered off after suffering a hand injury. Manuel Bartolo replaced the Brazilian-born goalkeeper. Four minutes after his introduction, Bartolo was beaten by Lima's diagonal scorcher after the Brazilian had received from Obiefule. Sliema ...
