The Malayan Emergency was a guerrilla war fought between Commonwealth armed forces and the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA), the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party, from 1948 to 1960.

The Malayan Emergency was the colonial government's term for the conflict. The MNLA termed it the Anti-British National Liberation War. The rubber plantations and tin mining industries had pushed for the use of the term "emergency" since their losses would not have been covered by Lloyd's insurers if it had been termed a "war."

Despite the communists' defeat in 1960, communist leader Chin Peng renewed the insurgency in 1967; it would last until 1989, and became known as the Communist Insurgency War. Although Australian and British armed forces had fully withdrawn from Malaysia years earlier, the insurgency still failed.

From the 1950's to 1960's Australian troops were involved in the Malayan Emergency and the highly secret operations of the Indonesian Confrontation which was not revealed to the public until 30 years after. This was also when the Lee Enfield 303 was replaced by the SLR (self loading rifle) 7.62mm. It was lighter, magazine capacity of 20rds compared to 5 rds for the 303, semi-auto gas operated and a pistol grip. The only problem was that the Bren Gun (303cal.) was still in use untill the GPMG M60 7.62mm came into service. The SLR was replaced by the AusStyer F88 5.56mm in the 1990's.

The Malayan Emergency was the only conflict the West won outright against Communism. A British Commonwealth army together with Malayan regulars, and help from the indigenous tribes succeeded in forcing out the communists (mostly made up of ethnic Chinese). This video shows SAS forces during a long range patrol in the Malayan jungle.
