Deutsche Lufthansa AG (FWB - LHA, Pink Sheets - DLAKY) (-deˈdɔʏt͡ʃə ˈlʊfthanza) is the flag carrier of Germany and the largest airline in Europe in terms of overall passengers carried. The name of the company is derived from Luft (the German word for "air"), and Hansa (after the Hanseatic League, a powerful medieval trading group).

The airline is the world's fifth-largest airline in terms of overall passengers carried, operating services to 18 domestic destinations and 183 international destinations in 78 countries across Africa, Americas, Asia and Europe. Together with its partners Lufthansa services around 410 destinations. With over 722 aircraft it has the third-largest passenger airline fleet in the world when combined with its subsidiaries.

Lufthansa's registered office and corporate headquarters is in Deutz, Cologne, with its main operations base (Lufthansa Aviation Center (LAC) and primary traffic hub at Frankfurt Airport in Frankfurt am Main with a second hub at Munich Airport. The majority of Lufthansa's pilots, ground staff, and flight attendants are based in Frankfurt.

Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance, formed in 1997. The Lufthansa Group operates more than 500 aircraft and employs 105,261 people worldwide of 146 nationalities (31 December 2007). In 2010, 77 million passengers flew with Lufthansa (not including Germanwings, BMI, AUA, or Brussels Airlines).

LH687 from Tel-Aviv to Frankfurt. Economy class is occupied with a few dozens of French tourists. Suddenly they start a 'pillow war' inside the cabin. Lufthansa flights attendant seems to take active part in the war. Enjoy !

The massive volcanic ash cloud that's brought European air travel to a virtual standstill, has stranded an estimated 32000 people hoping to travel to or from Russia. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered emergency measures to deal with the unprecedented crisis. The Dutch airline KLM and Germany's Lufthansa have carried out test flights through the ash cloud. They reported no damage to their aircraft, however air space in around 20 countries remains closed, affecting millions of people's travel plans. Forecasters believe disruption's likely to continue for several more days as light prevailing winds are failing to clear the cloud. The volcano in the south of Iceland began erupting on Wednesday, sending plumes of ash several kilometres into the air. Scientists have warned it could trigger a chain-reaction in other volcanoes in the country.

This has to be the nicest surprise I've had all year. This beauty landed at 7.25am with a medical emergency and parked out of sight before we arrived at MAN. Imagine my face when I saw this coming out to takeoff! Last A340 I saw here was in April, 2006. Enjoy this amazing machine!
