The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta (c-eniconlɛfˈtɛnənt) is the viceregal representative in Alberta of the Canadian monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who operates distinctly within the province but is also shared equally with the nine other jurisdictions of Canada and resides predominantly in her oldest realm, the United Kingdom. The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta is appointed in the same manner as the other provincial viceroys in Canada and is similarly tasked with carrying out most of the monarch's constitutional and ceremonial duties. The present, and 17th, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta is Donald Ethell, who has served in the role since 11 May 2010.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC is expected to disclose Friday that it has reached an agreement to pay nearly $5 billion for East Resources Inc., a closely held US natural-gas explorer, according to people familiar with the deal, a transaction that underscores the frenzied global interest in North American shale-gas production. Alberta handed the oil industry the final breaks in its rejigged royalty regime on Thursday, offering up incentives for shale gas and other unconventional resources for which spending has lagged.

He is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. In 2006, he was named one of the top fifty players in the modern era of the Canadian Football Leage. He also enjoyed a successful real estate career and a senior executive with the Calgary Flames from 1980 to 1994.
