Leeds City Council Video

Filmed in the clock tower of Leeds Town Hall, The Blind Club and Hunting Bears lifted their respective gear up 337 steps up to the top of the tower. Surrounded by the ticking mechanisms, the cogs and the wheels, we started the sessions as the bells turned over the hour The walk up the stairs was worth it. Everything was set, hearts had been raced and then settled. We were in synch. We were ready. This song has been haunting our office for the last few weeks. And as our office has been the entirety of Europe as we've been shooting a film, I've noticed James humming the tune in different countries across the Mediterranean, or in the Albanian mountains, or the sunrises of Slovenia. It haunts us. It's beautiful The sound recording was captured by our friends Adam Wilks and Justin Woodward at ARW Productions Leeds. Massive thanks are extended to Leeds City Council and the wonder that is Light Night's James Hill. Thank you! myspace.com/huntingbearsband

Light Night transformed Leeds city centre into an illuminated wonderland, featuring free arts performances, exhibitions, installations and activities. The event saw 50 venues hosting a range of more than 70 events, most of which continued until midnight. The Leeds Met programme for Light Night involves over 300 students and staff in creating and delivering innovative and creative site specific projects. Especially for our new students this is an opportunity to get to know their city, while for many their project will be integrated into their course. The range was greater this year than ever. Among others spectators enjoyed a Travelling Gallery by Woolgather to projections and performance at Broadcasting Place, animation of Queen Square by Performing Arts students, populating the city of Leeds Met Gallery's Into the Woods to the Peoples Light Night in Millennium Square and a live music festival outside the library by Innovation North students. Professor Max Farrar, Professor for Community Engagement, as the coordinator of the David Oluwale Memorial Committee, led a walk around the city centre and the waterfront, highlighting sites of significance in the David Oluwale story. All Leeds Met students are offered the opportunity to shine and volunteer as a Light Night Cultural Ambassador, working on a variety of roles to support this year's project and help the people of Leeds enjoy the Leeds Met events on Light Night itself.

Monday March 8, 2010 Leeds, UK Community members rallied in front of former Royal Park school to voice support for its transformation into a community centre, and to oppose bids to Leeds city council that would turn the space into businesses or more student flats. The council makes its decision on the future of the building this Wednesday, where another rally is also planned: Wednesday, 10th March at 12:00pm Outside the Rose Bowl (next to the Civic Hall) (Really near Millennium Square) From www.royalparkschool.org: Following years of struggle, the Royal Park Community Consortium presented a bid to the Council to run Royal Park School as a Community Centre. However, despite having a good self-sufficient, sustainable project, the Council is recommending to dismiss the RPCC bid and accept that of a private developer that would see the old Victorian school become about 35 student flats and commercial spaces. In an area like Hyde Park where there are more than 4000 empty student rooms there is no need for more student flats. Moreover, the council issued a policy for the areas of Headingley, Hyde Park, Woodhouse and some others around them that call to stop new student flat buildings.
