Knox County is a county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Its 2007 population was estimated at 423,874 by the United States Census Bureau. Its county seat is Knoxville, as it has been since the creation of the county. The county is at the geographical center of the Great Valley of East Tennessee. Near the heart of the county is the origin of the Tennessee River at the union of the Holston and French Broad Rivers.

The county is included in the Knoxville Metropolitan Area.

KNOXVILLE — Three University of Tennessee football players and a female companion are in the Knox County Detention Facility this morning on charges of attempted armed robbery. Janzen Jackson, Mike Edwards and NuKeese Richardson, all 18, were charged this morning after an armed robbery attempt at a Pilot station on Cumberland Avenue, according to the Knoxville Police Department. Each player and the woman face three counts of attempted armed robbery. The woman also faces drug charges. UT athletic director Mike Hamilton released a statement this morning about the episode. At this time we are currently evaluating the circumstances surrounding an incident involving Mike Edwards, Janzen Jackson and NuKeese Richardson, Hamilton said. Any decisions or comments regarding their status will not be made until the evaluations are complete. Both Richardson and Jackson are coming off a week in which they faced discipline from coach Lane Kiffin, the former for missing a practice and the latter for a violation of team rules. Kiffin has touted the discipline in his program and a clean arrest record as recently as Wednesdays SEC teleconference. Richardson is a 5-foot-10. 165-pound wide receiver from Pahokee, Fla. Jackson is a 6-foot, 174-pound defensive back from Lake Charles, La. Edwards is a 5-10 defensive back from Cleveland, Ohio. Knox County Parks and Recreation is encouraging local individuals and groups to enter their most creative scarecrows in the new Scarecrows in the Park event to be held October 22-31 at New Harvest Park, 4775 New Harvest Lane, in northeast Knox County. Scarecrows in the Park will open on Thursday, October 22, at 3 pm, at the New Harvest Park Farmers Market, and conclude on October 31. Scarecrows in the Park, a celebration of fall, includes a competition among groups to make the best and most original scarecrow. The scarecrows will be placed along the greenway loop at the park. Folks will walk the loop and then have a chance to vote for their favorites. Public voting, and a panel of celebrity judges, will determine the winners. A $10 entry fee is required, and The Home Depot is donating a bale of straw to each participant. Both cash and other prizes will be awarded to the winners during a Harvest Festival at the park, on Saturday, October 24, from 11-3 pm The Harvest Festival will feature storytelling, pumpkin painting, and other fall activities. The Knox County Schools annual school coupon book fundraiser will begin Thursday, Sept. 17 at 10:00 am with a kickoff event at Cedar Bluff Elementary School located at 705 N. Cedar Bluff Road School Coupon Books provide funds to meet some school needs identified by parents, teachers and school administrators. Students sold 164298 coupon books during the 2008 campaign representing a profit of $1396533.90. Since 1989, over 2.5 million coupon books have been sold to raise over $22 million for Knox County students. The coupon books cost $10.00 with $7.50 going to the school where the book is sold. Schools with a high number of economically disadvantaged students share $.65 from the sale of each book. Encyclopedia Britannica On-Line for all Knox County Schools libraries is funded by $.15 of the proceeds and another $.10 funds the Schooled for Success program, an eighth grade career awareness initiative in each Knox County middle school. The cost of printing is $1.10 per book. Only $.50 of the books cost goes to cover administrative and student incentive cost. The program was established in 1989 as a way to provide discretionary funds for schools to use to meet needs identified by parents and teachers, said Scott Bacon, the Knox County Schools supervisor of business partnerships.
