Entry from: Kangaroo Island, Australia Entry Title: "Kangaroo Island" Entry: "DAY 1: We were picked up outside our hostel at 6:15am for the two hour drive to Cape Jarvis and then had a forty-five minute calm ferry journey across to Kangaroo Island. Our first stop was Seal Bay where we got a guided tour down to the beach to watch the cute seals lazing around on the sand. We were advised to stay together as a group as it is more intimidating to the seals who might attack individuals. They were really cool and didn't look like they would hurt a fly. The Birds of Prey show, with Dave Irwin (the famous late Steve Irwin's cousin), was pretty good. Chrissy got to hold a kestrel and had an owl on her knee. It was awesome watching such big birds swooping round so close to us and demonstrating their prowess trying to catch something on the end of a rope that Dave was swinging round his head. Their largest bird was a huge Wedge-Tailed Eagle, which is also the fourth largest bird in the world. Our next stop was the Remarkable Rocks. At the toilets we got to see our first Australian wild snake - a dark coloured Tiger Snake. Chrissy chatted with him whilst I went to the loo. The massive granite boulders, sculpted by the weather were perched on a large granite dome rising steeply from the ocean. There were many ...

Entry from: Kingscote, Australia Entry Title: "Sea lions, koalas, and new friends" Entry: "Today we went on a tour of the island with a nice man named Tim. He took us to a nature reserve where we saw Glossy Black Cockatoos, which are very rare. There are only 300 left in the whole world and they are all on Kangaroo Island. We saw five of them flying around. The birds have black shiny feathers, with bright orange feathers on their tails. They have a cool crest, and a bunch of feathers around their throats and beaks, so it looks like they have helmets and face mask. Probably one of the reasons they are almost extinct is because they only eat the nuts of sheoak plants and they only eat them with their left feet while turning the nut clockwise. Crazy! During the day we saw lots of wallabies and kangaroos, an echidna, and three koalas - all in the wild! The koalas are the cutest - they were just handing out in the trees right next to the road. They seem to sleep a lot. Tim cooked us an Australian barbi on a farm next to a river - fresh fish and homemade cheese and homemade chips - delicious! I even tried ginger beer, which is not really beer but is spicy on the tongue. After lunch, we went to Seal Bay where we saw lots and lots of endangered sea lions. We had to be careful, because the males are very ...

Entry from: Kingscote, Australia Entry Title: "Kangaroo Island!" Entry: "Departures from campsites are soo slow...maybe I am too much in a hurry to see places First stop on our bumpy journey to the west coast through Bay of Shoals and North Coast Road, is beautiful Emu Bay - a white sandy beach. We drove our wicked van in the sand and even ventured into a swim in this amazing setting. And of course, picture and silly times. The North Coast Road continues for nearly 40kms to Stokes Bay. The unsealed, gravel roads, are very rough for our 600000 km, old, tin van... At times you think it is going to break in half and so will our ear drums...but drives marvellously I must admit. Walk through the rocks on the right of the picnic area to discover Stokes Beach. You will find that all that bone shaking was worth the detour. Another (yeah but it doesnt get boring) half moon stretch of white sand topped with a small but regular surf, high enough to have some fun body surfing... The pcinic area overlooks the bay and seemed to me the perfect place to have lunch. Picnic areas are great in Australia, everything you need is there. Why dont we do the same in Euope! Snelling Beach is a smaller but very private beach. I am getting quite jealous of those who own the house on top of the cliff just above the beach. nice ...

Entry from: Kingscote, Australia Entry Title: "Kangaroo Island" Entry: "Melbourne (October 19 - 21) On October 19th we flew into Melbourne from Mildura. It was my third trip to Melbourne this year. We mainly came here to see my cousin, Fay, who studies here. This time, however, I skipped the trip to the Great Ocean Road (GOR). Instead of going on the trip with my mom and sister, I hung around the city and checked out a couple of museums. The Immigration museum was pretty unique and most of the stories were very poignant and heart-rending. Although Australia started off as a convict island, voluntary immigration quickly replaced transportation (as a punishment). Australia did have some racist immigration policies though. The "white" Australia policy was created to prevent immigration by non-whites to oz. This policy was initially created to keep the Chinese out during the Australian gold rush. Remarkably, the policy was only repealed in 1975. My next stop was the Melbourne cricket ground (MCG) sports museum. This museum is entirely dedicated to sports, especially Australian sports such as Aussie-rules football, cricket, and tennis. It also has a huge display on the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Kangaroo Island (October 21 - October 23) Kangaroo Island (KI) is a tiny island just off the South Australian coast ...
