After a very promising beginning in Botafogo, Beto made his debut for the Brazilian national team in 1995, in a friendly match against Argentina, in Buenos Aires, which Brazil won 1-0. He would go on to play for the national team on 13 occasions, having been a member of the squad that won the 1999 Copa América, in Paraguay.
