Joseph William "Joe" Namath (-enˈneɪmɨθpron; born May 31, 1943), nicknamed "Broadway Joe" or "Joe Willie", is a former American football quarterback. He played college football for the University of Alabama under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and his assistant, Howard Schnellenberger, from 1962 1964, and professional football in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL) during the 1960s and 1970s. Namath was an American Football League icon and played for that league's New York Jets for most of his professional career but finished his career with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1985.

Namath retired after playing in 140 games 62 wins, 63 losses and 4 ties. In his career he threw 173 touchdowns, 220 interceptions, and completed 1,886 passes for 27,663 yards. During his thirteen years in the AFL and NFL he played for three division champions (the 1968 and 1969 AFL East Champion Jets and the 1977 NFC West Champion Rams), earned one league championship (1968 AFL Championship), and one "world championship" (Super Bowl III).

In 1999, he was ranked number 96 on The Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. He was the only player on the list to have spent a majority of his career with the Jets.

He is perhaps best known for boldly guaranteeing a Jets' victory over Don Shula's NFL Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III (1969) and then making good on his boast.

WATCH VIDEO IN HIGH QUALITY!!! September 24, 1972. Johnny Unitas and Joe Namath light up the scoreboard in a classic game. Namath passes for almost 500 yards and six touchdown passes. Unitas passes for over 370 yards. SIdenote: This was the first Colt game I can remember watching on television. Final Score, Jets 44, Colts 34 The rematch a few weeks later was exciting as well. Joe Namath has a Hail Mary pass answered in the closing seconds. Marty Domres tries the same and is successful as well, only that the Domres's completion came up two yards short of the endzone as the clock ran out. Final Score Jets 24, Colts 20 Namath wasn't through having "shoot-outs" with Colt quarterbacks. In 1974, Bert Jones and Joe Namath went toe to toe in a 45-38 Jets victory in Baltimore. Highlights of that game are also in my collection of videos (1974-week 14).Note: Retired players, please contact your union about making available for purchase ($20-$30) the original broadcasts of games from this era. The revenue from the sales of the games from your era could be used for your pensions and medical issues.

Texas 21 Alabama 17 January 1, 1965 Orange Bowl Stadium First Night Game a Classic Texas upset top-ranked Alabama, 21-17, in the first prime-time night game in Orange Bowl history. The Longhorns stopped Alabama quarterback Joe Namath inches short of the goal line on a crucial fourth-down play late in the game that would have given the Crimson Tide the lead. The defeat overshadowed a heroic performance by Namath, the senior quarterback who didn't start the game because of a knee injury. He completed 18 of 37 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Steve Sloan started the game for the Tide, but he couldnt get the offense going following two missed field goals. The Longhorns' Ernie Koy ran for a 79 yard for a touchdown on Texas first possession. Texas went up 14-0 after quarterback Jim Hudson hit George Sauer for a 69-yard score. Alabama head coach Bear Bryant needed some instant offense. In came Namath. He completed 10 passes in driving the Tide 87 yards, sewing up a touchdown with a 7-yard toss to Wayne Trimble. Texas came back with a 72 yard drive that ended on Koy's right-end run with 27 seconds remaining in the half. Namath came out firing after intermission, hitting Ray Perkins with a 20-yard pass to close the gap to 21-14 with 9:25 left in the third. When Texas' Marvin Kristynik fumbled at his own 34 late in the fourth quarter, Namath was at the controls once again. After a run and a pair of completed passes, Alabama had ...
