James Ronald ("Jim") Ryun (born April 29, 1947) is an American former track athlete and politician, who was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1996 to 2007, representing the 2nd District in Kansas. In the 2006 election, Ryun was defeated by Democratic challenger Nancy Boyda. In the Kansas Republican primary on August 5, 2008, he was defeated by Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins.

Years prior to his political career, Ryun had an athletic career that saw him become a world-class runner and the last American to hold the world record in the mile run. His career was highlighted by many world record times, although in his three tries he never won an Olympic gold medal.

Jim Ryun was the first US High School Miler to break 4 mintues in a High School Competition Only race. His 3:58.3 to win the mile at the 1965 Kansas High School State Meet is still the record for the fastest time ever in a race that includes only high school competitors. In 2011 Lucas Verzbicas also achieved the feat. Ironically it was in the Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile at Icahn Stadium in New York City in a time of 3:59:71.

Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi won a controversial men's 1500 metres Olympic gold on Tuesday, a day after being thrown out of the event for not trying in his 800 metres heat then reinstated when a doctor said he had dropped out because of injury. If he was injured the 24-year-old enjoyed a miraculous overnight recovery as he hit the front at the bell and streaked clear of a tight pack with a devastating final lap to win in three minutes 34.08 seconds and follow in the footsteps of compatriot Noureddine Morcelli who won the title in 1996. Leonel Manzano finished strongly to take silver, the United States's first 1500 medal since Jim Ryun in 1968, ahead of Moroccan Abdalaati Iguider. Kenya failed to get a medal for the first time in 20 years. Tuesday's victory completed a remarkable rise for 24-year-old Makhloufi, who began the year with a best time of 3:32.94 but improved it to 3:30.80 - having also taken almost three seconds off his 800 metres best.

(watch in high quality: add &fmt=18 to the end of the url) 1965: Jim Ryun from Wichita - first high-schooler to run the mile in under four minutes. Only three other high-schoolers have done it since. That took 40 years... and all of them was white boys. Well, this ain't Kansas and it ain't 1965 - it's now. And my name ain't Jim, it's Henry. I run the Mile and no black high school kid has run the Mile in under four - at least that you know of.
