While Mansfield's film career was short-lived, she had several box office successes and won the Theatre World Award, a Golden Globe and a Golden Laurel. Mansfield is well-remembered for her starring roles in three 20th Century Fox films: The Girl Can't Help It (1956); Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957); and, The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw (1958). As the demand for blonde bombshells declined in the 1960s, Mansfield remained a popular celebrity, continuing to attract large crowds outside the USA and in lucrative and successful nightclub tours. Mansfield had been a Playboy Playmate of the Month and appeared in the magazine several additional times. In her acting career, however, she increasingly secured parts in lower-budget melodramas and comedies. Her most noted film in this period was the romantic-comedy, Promises! Promises! (1963), in which she appeared nude in four scenes. Mansfield tried to break to serious drama with roles in films such as: Illegal (1955); The Burglar (1957) (that was filmed in 1955); The Wayward Bus (1957); Too Hot to Handle (1960); The Challenge (1960); Einer Frisst den anderen (1964); and, Single Room Furnished (1968): all of which were only moderately successful. She died in an automobile accident at age 34. |
