ELLENTON, Fla. - An overturned taker truck completely shut down I-75 for hours and created a traffic nightmare in many parts of Manatee County Wednesday (June 4, 2008). Southbound lanes are still closed. Around 4pm Wednesday, a fuel tanker truck traveling southbound and approaching exit 224 on Interstate 75 swerved to avoid another vehicle, lost control and drove off the overpass onto US 301, bursting into flames. The I-75 bridge sustained structural damage from the fire and resulted in the closure of both directions of the interstate. Witnesses of yesterday's crash describe that intense hea and smoke that came from the explosion. John Dix was working when he saw just yards away the crash happened before his eyes. It s amazing, i have never seen nothing like that. "I turned, and when I turned I see this truck, I see this line of fire, like it's falling down." He also could hear that fuel tanker bursting into flames. "It's like a lot of thunder...I heard three times, like boom, boom, boom." "The heat was so dramatic, I felt the heat all the way over here. I thought I was going to have to vacate from this area, " says Larry Akins. The driver of the tanker truck, 54-year-old Raymond Neumann of Brooksville, was flown to Tampa General Burn Unit with severe burns. Four other vehicles were involved in the accident, with two drivers suffering minor injuries. A vehicle driving on US 301 was damaged by falling debris from the overpass. The driver was uninjured. MONROE, Ohio -- A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm Monday night and burned to the ground, police said. The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati. The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 pm, Monroe police dispatchers said. The sculpture, 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signaling a touchdown. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained early Tuesday. The fire spread from the statue to an adjacent amphitheater but was confined to the attic area, and no one was injured, police Chief Mark Neu said. The fire department would release a monetary damage estimate Tuesday, he said. Travelers on Interstate 75 often were startled to come upon the huge statue by the roadside, but many said America needs more symbols like it. So many people stopped at the church campus that church officials had to build a walkway to accommodate them. The 4000-member, nondenominational church was founded by former horse trader Lawrence Bishop and his wife. Bishop said in 2004 he was trying to help people, not impress them, with the statue. He said his wife proposed the Jesus ...

Along I-75, north of Cincinnati around the 29 mile marker are a few neat things to see. Not only is a large outlet mall under construction (like we need another mall on this planet!) at the Rt 63 exit, but aso one of the largest indoor flea markets as well: Trader's World. Just past that, right up the interstate is the Solid Rock Church, with the famous statue of Jesus's hands stretched upwards. It's quite an interesting piece of art.
