Interstate 664 (I-664) is an Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of Virginia, forming part of the Hampton Roads Beltway. It is a connection between Interstate 64 in Hampton and I-64's east end (where it meets Interstate 264) near Bowers Hill in Chesapeake. I-664 is about 14 mi (22.5 km) shorter than the bypassed segment of I-64. In addition to Chesapeake and Hampton, I-664 passes through Suffolk and Newport News along the way. I-664 was not an original part of the Interstate Highway System authorized in 1956; it was part of the 1500 mi (2414 km) that were added in 1968. One of the more recent portions of the IHS to be built in Virginia, I-664 was completed in April 1992. I-664 includes the 4.6-mile-long Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel across Hampton Roads between Newport News and Suffolk. In January 1997, the 56-mile-long I-64/I-664 loop was designated and signed as the Hampton Roads Beltway. The inner loop of the beltway is signed along I-664 north, and the outer loop is on I-664 south. |
