The horn is a brass instrument consisting of about 12 13 feet (3.66 3.96 meters) of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell. A musician who plays the horn is called a horn player (or less frequently, a hornist).

Descended from the natural horn, the instrument is often informally known as the French horn. However, this term is technically incorrect since the instrument is not French in its ethnicity, it is actually German. Therefore, the International Horn Society has recommended since 1971 that the instrument be simply called the horn. French horn is still the most commonly used name for the instrument in the United States.

Horns have valves, operated with the left hand, to route the air into extra tubing to change the pitch. Most horns have lever-operated rotary valves, but some horns like the Vienna horn use piston valves (similar to trumpet valves). A horn without valves is known as a natural horn, changing pitch along the natural harmonics of the instrument (similar to a bugle), but with a wide range of notes due to the long tubing.

Three valves control the flow of air in the single horn, which is tuned to F or less commonly, B . The more common double horn has a fourth valve, usually operated by the thumb, which routes the air to one set of tubing tuned to F or the second set of tubing tuned to B . Triple horns with five valves are also made, tuned in F, B , and a descant E or F.

Ifor with my eldest son showing how to teach children to hold the instrument without any physical strain. I have left the preamble and chatty bit at the end on the video simply because it is "typical Ifor". A seriously nice bloke. My son is a bit older now and would probably hate being called "cute". Who better to have though as a first teacher than Ifor James?

My newest offbeat instrument, from eBay. Casio started making these in 1984, and I don't know how long they continued, although I know there were more models (DH-200, 280, 500 and 800). It's not very sophisticated, although the breath pressure sensitivity is surprisingly good, so dynamics aren't bad at all. Note bending isn't an option, unfortunately, except with the "portamento" key, which really only works for fairly large intervals--and it's a little spacey at that. The little beeps you occasionally hear are me hitting the octave key by mistake. It's very touchy, and the spring doesn't have enough resistance. I need to figure out a way to make it springier, so the slightest touch of the thumb doesn't send the note up an octave. The "flute" voice is by far the least appealing. The keys are noisy, as you can hear, but the general sensitivity of them isn't as bad as you might think. The thing is surprisingly playable. There's a delayed automatic vibrato, that you can't turn off. You can, however, override it with your own vibrato.

The song Sun Arise has an interesting history. It is an aboriginal kind of song that Australian entertainer and British TV personality Rolf Harris co-wrote with Australian naturalist Harry Butler. The song was recorded in 1962 and rose steadily to as high as #2 in the UK chart until Elvis Presley stopped the song on its track. At the Vancouver concert on Aug 26, 2010 at the PNE 2010, Harris was accompanied by his friend Shining Bear who played an Australian aboriginal didgeridoo (a long horn type of instrument) with Vancouver's very own Dal Richards conducting the orchestra. Rolf Harris and his wife came to Vancouver accidentally in 1961. Although even back then he was working in British television, Harris readily admitted that it was in Vancouver that he had honed his skill as a showman performing in front of a live audience. As the saying goes, the rest is history. When Harris returned to England in 1962, he went on to become a very successful TV personality and entertainer in both the UK and Australia among other places and even painted a portrait for Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 just prior to her 80th birthday. Harris was in Vancouver again in 2010 at the Pacific National Exhibition to help celebrate the centennial of the Vancouver fair. He performed a number of his famous tunes including Two Little Boys, Vancouver Town, Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport and Sun Arise.
