The Honda RC211V was developed in 2001 by HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) to replace the Honda NSR500 because regulations for the World Championship motorcycle road racing 500 cc (30.5 cuin) class were changed drastically for the 2002 season. The regulations changed, two-stroke engines were as before limited to 500 cc (30.5 cuin) and 4 cylinders, but four-stroke engines were allowed to grow up to 990 cc (60.4 cuin) and from three to six cylinders. The name of the class was modified to MotoGP, and is limited to race prototypes only.

The model name designates the following:

* RC=Honda's traditional racing prefix for 4-stroke bikes

* 211=first works bike of the 21st century

* V=V engine

(Fuente: Repsol Media Service) El piloto Repsol ha pilotado en los pasados cuatro años la última 990cc desarrollada por Honda y las tres evoluciones de la RC212V de 800cc, siempre luciendo los colores de la compañía española. En la temporada 2006, Dani Pedrosa hacía realidad un sueño: llegar a la categoría reina del Mundial de Motociclismo en el seno del Repsol Honda Team. Inmediatamente se convirtió en uno de los favoritos de la categoría, consiguiendo una segunda posición en su primera carrera, precisamente en Jerez, y su primera victoria muy poco después, en el Gran Premio de China. Subcampeón del Mundo en el 2007 y tercero tanto en 2008 como en 2009, Pedrosa ha sido siempre uno de los principales protagonistas desde que llegara a MotoGP. Cuatro años en los que ha pilotado las últimas evoluciones de Honda, comenzando con la RC211V 990cc de 2006, pasando por las diferentes evoluciones de la Honda RC212V de 2007 a 2009, y llegando a la versión 2010 con la que está compitiendo esta temporada. Con estas motos, Dani ha vivido el paso de los motores de 990cc a los de 800cc, y con ellas ha protagonizado momentos difíciles y también victorias inolvidable.
