Heartland rock is a genre of rock music that developed in the 1970s and reached its commercial peak in the 1980s, when it became one of the best-selling genres in the United States. It was characterized by a straightforward musical style, a concern with the average, blue collar American life, and a conviction that rock music has a social or communal purpose beyond just entertainment. The genre is exemplified by the commercial success of singer-songwriters Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Tom Petty and John Mellencamp, along with less widely known acts such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and the Iron City Houserockers. It was also associated with a number of country music artists including Steve Earle and Joe Ely. In the 1990s, many established acts faded and the genre began to fragment, but the major figures have continued to record with commercial success.

December 1, 2006 9:20 AM CST BNSF Railway Red Rock Subdivision, MP 401.93 Norman, OK Train: Amtrak 821 "Heartland Flyer" Motive Power: Amtrak 172 (P42DC) & Amtrak 90229 (NPCU, former F40PH, trailing) Today is the first day of December and yesterday's (Nov 30) heavy snow has moved on into the eastern US. A beautiful but bitter cold day (temperatures in the low 20's) is underway as the southbound Amtrak Heartland Flyer pulls into a snow-covered Norman. Although much has changed on this line over the decades - everything from the locomotives to the rolling stock to the company who owns the tracks - seeing the classic scene of a passenger train pulling into an old train station depot (built 1909) takes us back in time to an era when life was slower and a little bit simpler, and the train was the way to travel. After a brief stop in Norman, we see Amtrak P42DC No. 172 lead her train away as she heads south for Ft. Worth, TX, where there is an interchange with the Amtrak Texas Eagle. Next stop, Purcell, OK. Please excuse the minor glitch that occurs near the beginning of the video. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was recording over some older video, so it had a little bit of a hiccup there in that part of the recording. (At least I had already made copies of the other video that I was overwriting!) And yes, I do move around quite a bit in this video, but keep in mind that I had to take my gloves off to get ...

Sister Hazel are an alternative rock band from Gainesville, Florida, whose style also blends elements of folk rock, pop, classic rock 'n' roll and southern rock. Their music is characterized by highly melodic tunes and generally optimistic lyrics. The band's instrumentation often features abrupt shifts among electric, acoustic and a cappella, with striking use of tacets. Though often described as alternative, Sister Hazel leans toward an upbeat sound and away from the dark emotions and clashing punk discordance often association with the alternative rock genre. Contents [hide] Sister Hazel formed in Gainesville, Florida in 1994 and was named for Sister Hazel Williams, a local nun who ran a homeless shelter.[1] The group released its self-titled debut album in 1994 through its independent record label, Croakin' Poets and shortly after its release, singer/guitarist Ryan Newell and drummer Mark Trojanowski joined the band. Newell played on the album before officially joining the group. The band's second album, ...Somewhere More Familiar was released in 1997 and sold approximately 30000 copies through its initial pressing, prompting Universal Records to sign the band. Universal re-released ...Somewhere More Familiar in late 1997.[2] A single from the album, "All For You" hit #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains the band's most successful single. The band's third album Fortress was released in 2000 by Universal. The band worked with producers Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses ...

I'm finally blasting the energy level UP with this week's video! Bruce Springsteen knows how to SHAKE IT UP! More importantly, The Boss conveys his messages through his heartland rock. With a mic in my hand, the very first phrase from "Born to Run" completely consumed me. I had always enjoyed listening to this great song on the radio. I never thought singing "Born to Run" would resonate with me so well. At least, that's how I feel. I just decided to sing it and I completely fell in love with everything about "Born to Run"! It felt so natural. I never had to learn the song. Maybe, I was a rebel WITH a cause in a past life. It's one thing to listen to a song and appreciate it, but the appreciation becomes a consuming experience when singing it. I hope that you will all see how much I truly enjoy singing "Born to Run"! Born to Run is the third album by the American rock singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen. It was released on August 25, 1975 through Columbia Records. It captured the heaviness of Springsteen's earlier releases while displaying a more diverse range of influences. Born to Run was a critical and commercial success and became Springsteen's breakthrough album. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, eventually selling six million copies in the US by the year 2000. Two singles were released from the album: "Born to Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out"; the first helped Springsteen to reach mainstream popularity. The tracks "Thunder Road" and "Jungleland ...

Note: NPCU F40PH No. 90229 is no longer in service on this train. As far as I can tell, it was last seen in service on Amtrak's "Hiawatha" corridor between Chicago and Milwaukee: www.youtube.com . I do not know what has become of No. 90229 since then. Also, the old Santa Fe "El Capitan" Bi-Level coaches that were in service on this train have since been retired as well.

Playlist: www.youtube.com The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22, 1978 at The National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties Jamaican Labour Party and the People's National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers' performance of "Jammin'", when Marley joined the hands of political rivals Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).

Gritty, fast, and direct. Despite receiving little love on future compilations, this has always been one of my favorites from the Iron City Houserockers' second album "Have a Good Time But Get Out Alive!" (1980). This song is one of five on the album that were produced and arranged by an uncredited Steven Van Zandt (also known as Little Steven). Have a Good Time but Get out Alive! is a studio album by the Iron City Houserockers. Something of a heartland rock masterpiece, Have a Good Time but Get out Alive! was where the Iron City Houserockers showed just how good they could be with the right songs and producers. From the album artwork to the lyrics and tight delivery, the album seethes with barely restrained grit and desperation. Although well-received critically, commercial success eluded the Iron City Houserockers outside of the rust belt. Among the strongest tracks are the title track, "Don't Let Them Push You Around", "We're Not Dead Yet", the two-part medley of "Old Man Bar" and Junior's Bar" and "Rock Ola", Grushecky's first truly competent ballad. According to the liner notes, E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt produced and arranged five songs ("Junior's Bar", "Angela", "Running Scared", "Blondie", and "Don't Let Them Push You Around") and played lead guitar on "Junior's Bar" before leaving due to creative differences with Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson. The album was reissued on CD format in 1999. I wish I could upload "We're Not Dead Yet" as well, another ...

Off my vinyl LP, a fine Springsteen-influenced album that came out in 1981. Album images I took myself. If anything, this album was more a preview of Springsteen's "Born In The USA" (which was still three years in the future) than early Boss. If you can get past the derivativeness, this is as excellent an example of heartland rock as you'll find from the era. To hear more songs: www.youtube.com I've been going through my record collection and found many LP's that will probably never be issued on CD and widely available, so decided to put some on here so people can at least enjoy a few long lost gems from the 80's. Technical Note: As always I try to get the best reproduction possible by cleaning my albums with a pad, using a decent needle, and putting the transferred wave file through a basic de-clicker program to remove most pops and clicks. However, since I don't have access -- or could even afford -- a professional studio with hi-tech gadgets to really clean up the sound, like all vinyl LPs there is inherent surface noise and other imperfections I can't fix.
