The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez or Sea of Cortés or Vermilion Sea;

locally known in the Spanish language as Mar de Cortés or Mar Bermejo or Golfo de California) is a body of water that separates the Baja California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland. It is bordered by the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa with a coastline of approximately 2500 mi (4023.4 km). Rivers which flow into the Gulf of California include the Colorado, Fuerte, Mayo, Sinaloa, Sonora, and the Yaqui. The gulf's surface area is about 62000 sqmi (160579.3 km2). The name "Gulf of California" predominates on most maps in English today. The name "Sea of Cortés" is the one preferred by most local residents.

The Gulf is thought to be one of the most diverse seas on the planet, and is home to more than 5,000 species of macroinvertebrates. Baja California itself is actually one of the longest, most isolated peninsulas in the world, second only to the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The Gulf of California is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

www.prisonplanet.com Alex Jones breaks down the takeover by offshore banking powers-- newly empowered by Congress' banking "reform," expanded taxes worldwide, as well as accelerated moves towards ending the Dollar's reserve status, including urging from a recent United Nations report. This Fourth of July, the United States is indeed in peril; it is not only the Gulf Oil Spill, Russian spies and threats of war with Iran which Americans must worry about. Instead it is the quiet but deadly conquest by private, central banks, who lobbied Congress to once again vest new powers in the Federal Reserve and, by all indicators, further weaken the US economy through its future actions. The financial crisis has indeed been developed in such a way that no nation can ever repay all the debt, and control by global economic forces is all but inevitable. "This is as big as World War I or World War II," Alex Jones comments. "What is happening now is bigger than the banking takeover of 1913... it is a worldwide financial coup d'etat."

March 15, 2011 (Beware of the Ides of March): Asteroid 2000 PN9 (Blue Kachina) and of Comet Elenin aka Nibiru (Red Kachina) for a possible Earth Shift of 20-30 degrees, with two massive explosions. Great Lakes will empty into the Gulf of Mexico; and California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona go under Pacific Ocean. Very possible indeed. Earth passes through Comet Elenin's (debris) tail between Oct. 28-Nov. 1, with a possible asteroid/meteorite impact/strike. March 15, Sept 25, Nov 22, 2011 are 3 distinct major conjunctions with very possible shifts of 20-30 degrees (or more). A powerful earthquake Monday shook fishing villages along Mexico's Gulf of California, prompting alarm as far away as Phoenix, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. sense dog The US National Earthquake Information Center said the 6.9-magnitude quake struck at 12:59 pm (1:59 EDT, 17:59 GMT) and was centered 76 miles (122 kilometers) north-northeast of Santa Isabel in Baja California and 331 miles (533 kilometers) southeast of the border city of Tijuana. It was the strongest of four quakes of 5.0-magnitude or greater that struck the area over a 45-minute period late Monday morning. Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Alex Rangel said a high-rise near downtown shook violently enough that workers evacuated but there were no reports of injuries or damage. The quake was located about 460 miles from downtown Phoenix. Wilfredo Rivera, a manager at the Posada Santa Gemma hotel in Bahia Kino near the coast, said doors slammed as the ground rocked.

Isla Rasa is a tiny island in the Gulf of California, Mexico. It is the breeding site of 95% of the worlds population of Heermanns Gulls (Larus heermanni), and Elegant Terns (Sterna elegans) as well as a very large population of Royal Terns (Sterna maxima). These migratory seabirds come from thousands of miles away. The gulls migrate from the Pacific coast from southern Canada to southern Mexico and the terns migrate from the South American Pacific. During the summer, after the birds have settled into the nesting areas, the island is literally covered with birds engaged in the timeless rituals of reproduction. In the middle of the 20th century, excessive egg collection drastically reduced the seabird population. Fortunately several Mexican and US conservationists helped to classify the island as a protected area in 1964. One very passionate Mexican scientist, Dr. Enriqueta Velarde, is now at the helm of Isla Rasa conservation. In continuously conducting research on the island, she has not only helped protect the seabirds and provide us with valuable science, but she has provided a training ground for students interested in conservation.

This story was updated at 6:32 pm EDT. A huge NASA balloon loaded with a telescope painstakingly built to scan the sky at wavelengths invisible to the human eye crashed in the Australian outback Thursday, destroying the $2 million astronomy experiment and just missing nearby onlookers, according to Australian media reports. In dramatic video released by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the giant 400-foot (121-meter) balloon is seen just beginning to lift its payload, then the telescope gondola appears to unexpectedly come loose from its carriage. The telescope crashes through a fence and overturns a nearby parked sport utility vehicle before finally stopping. "No one was injured. A mishap investigation board is being convened," NASA officials said in a statement released late Thursday. The attempted balloon telescope launch took place at the Alice Springs Balloon Launching Centre, near the town of Alice Springs, in the northern territory of Australia. The wayward balloon overturned one car, but missed another parked nearby with local Alice Springs couple Stan and Betty Davies, who had come to watch the launch, still inside. "We were sitting in our car and preparing to move it out of the way and we were actually about a foot of being wiped out," ABC quoted Davies as saying. The balloon was carrying the Nuclear Compton Telescope (NCT), a gamma-ray telescope built by astronomer Steven Boggs and his colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley ...

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, also called the "Battles for Leyte Gulf", and formerly known as the "Second Battle of the Philippine Sea", is generally considered to be the largest naval battle of World War II and also one of the largest naval battles in history. It was fought in waters near the Philippine islands of Leyte, Samar, and Luzon, from 23 to 26 October 1944, between naval and naval-air forces of the Allies and those of the Empire of Japan. On 20 October, United States troops invaded the island of Leyte as part of a strategy aimed at isolating Japan from the countries it had occupied in South East Asia, and in particular depriving its forces and industry of vital oil supplies. The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) mobilized nearly all of its remaining major naval vessels in an attempt to defeat the Allied invasion, but was repulsed by the US Navy's 3rd and 7th Fleets. The IJN failed to achieve its objective, suffered very heavy losses, and never afterwards sailed to battle in comparable force. The majority of its surviving heavy ships, deprived of petroleum fuel, remained in their bases for the rest of the Pacific War. The Battle of Leyte Gulf included four major naval battles: the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, the Battle of Surigao Strait, the Battle off Cape Engaño and the Battle off Samar, as well as other actions. The Battle of Leyte Gulf is also notable as the first battle in which Japanese aircraft carried out organized kamikaze attacks. Also worth noting is the fact ...
