The Gulf Cartel (Spanish: Cártel del Golfo) is one of the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico, and perhaps the oldest organized crime group in the country. It is currently based in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, but it also has significant presence in 13 states around Mexico, with important areas of operation in the cities of Nuevo Laredo, Miguel Alemán, Reynosa and Matamoros in the northern state of

Tamaulipas; it also has important operations in the states of Nuevo León and in Michoacán. Cities like Tampico and Nuevo Laredo are still disputed plazas between the Gulf Cartel and The Zetas. The Gulf Cartel traffics cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin across the U.S.-Mexico border to major cities in the United States. The group is known for its violent methods and intimidation.

Aside from earning money from the sales of narcotics, the cartel also imposes "taxes" on anyone passing narcotics or aliens through Gulf Cartel territory. The cartel is also known to operate protection rackets, extorting money from local businesses and to kidnap for ransom money.

www.instablogs.com Mexico drug war: leader of gulf cartel zetas arrested President Felipe Calderon said soldiers seized Sigifredo Najera, a leader of the ruthless Gulf cartel Zetas, in the northern city of Saltillo, Coahuila. Calderon stated in a speech from Mexico City, "Najera is directly responsible for the torture and killing of the Mexican Army soldiers, the attacks on the US consulate and the Televisa (TV broadcaster) in Monterrey," In another boost for Calderon, Mexico arrested Vicente Zambada, son of top Sinaloan kingpin Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who is wanted in the United States. El Mayo runs the powerful Sinaloa coalition along with the country's most-wanted fugitive, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. Last week, Forbes Magazine estimated Guzman's drug empire wealth at over $1 billion. Tags:

www.instablogs.com Mexican drug war is a de facto turf war between rival drug cartels and government forces. As cartels get dismantled or left without leaders violent power struggles erupt over who takes their place. At present, these powerfully organized crime syndicates have aligned themselves into 2 blocks led by Gulf Cartel and Sinaloa Cartel. These two blocks are involved in massive, violent turf wars currently being carried out throughout Mexico with the help of their own private army, for eg. Los Zetas

Omar Ortiz, a Mexican football star, has been arrested for allegedly taking part in a kidnapping ring for a major drug cartel. 'El Gato', or 'The Cat,' as Ortiz's bright eyes led him to be called, is accused of selecting victims, mainly business owners, for ransoms of up to $73000 for the Gulf drug cartel. Having played a single match for the Mexican national team in 2002, Ortiz, a longtime regular for top division side Monterrey, was suspended for two years in 2010 after testing positive for steroids. Al Jazeera's Bhanu Bhatnagar reports.

A worsening dispute between the Gulf drug cartel and its former security force, the Zetas, has resulted in 200 deaths in two weeks in the northeastern states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León and unprecedented censorship along Mexicos border with Texas. The news blackout is backed by threats, kidnapping, and attacks against journalists. In the past 14 days, at least eight Mexican journalists have been abducted in the Reynosa area, which is across the border from McAllen," One died after a severe beating, according to reports that could not be independently verified. Two were released by their captors. The rest are missing. The five missing journalists are a reporter for El Mañana newspaper, a freelance photographer from the papers afternoon edition, La Tarde, two journalists from an online news service, and a TV cameraman, Corchado says, citing editors and reporters who spoke anonymously. Even in Mexico, one of the worlds most dangerous countries for journalists, the recent intimidation campaign is more far-reaching and effective than previous attempts. UnlikeCiudad Juárez, a drug-plagued city where news organizations update the daily death toll, news media in the Gulf Cartel region say they have no other choice but to censor themselves. The city of Reynosa, has created a Twitter account to give details about violence in the city.
