As an overseas department of the French Republic, it is not a member of FIFA. Guadeloupe is therefore not eligible to enter the World Cup, but since Guadeloupeans are French citizens, they are eligible to play for the French national team. Lilian Thuram, born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, won the 1998 FIFA World Cup playing for France. However, Guadeloupe is an associated member of the CONCACAF and a full member of the Caribbean Football Union, and thus eligible for all competitions organized by both. Indeed, according to the status of the FFF (article 34, paragraph 6): "[...]Under the control of related continental confederations, and with the agreement of the FFF, those leagues can organize international sport events at a regional level or set up teams in order to participate to them." A special rule of the Gold Cup only allows players to join the team if they have not played for France during the past five years. This rule also applies for Martinique and French Guiana. On the other side, any player joining the Guadeloupean team is allowed to join the French national team afterwards with no time restrictions. |
