It primarily served as the home stadium for the New York Giants and New York Jets American football teams of the NFL. The stadium was located at State Route 120 and State Route 3 (which is accessed from Midtown Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel). The New Jersey Turnpike was also close by. In 2009, it became accessible by rail via New Jersey Transit's Meadowlands Station, but only for events when more than 50,000 attendees were expected. The south tower of Giants Stadium was demolished on May 19, 2010. By June 26, all that remained were two entrance gates, an empty escalator bank, and a small portion of the stadium's outer shell. On June 28, those were cleared out and demolition work was complete; the lot will now be used for parking for the New Meadowlands Stadium. |
