The Ford Falcon is a full-size car which has been manufactured by Ford Australia since 1960. Each model from the XA series of 1972 onward has been designed, developed and built in Australia and/or New Zealand, following the phasing out of the American Falcon of 1960-71 which had been re-engineered locally for the harsher Australian conditions. As a result of the longevity of its Australian production, the Falcon is one of the biggest selling names in world automotive history, selling over 3,000,000 in six generations to 2003, almost exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. As of July 2007, Ford sells upwards of 3,000 units per month.

Ford has manufactured over three million units since 1960, and has topped the sales charts in Australia on many occasions. Currently the Falcon line-up is offered in sedan and utility body styles, however in the past panel vans, station wagons, and hardtops (coupes) were offered. Australian made Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores dominate the ranks of taxis in Australia and New Zealand, and are also used as police patrol cars.

Luxury variants of the current model Falcon, collectively known as the G Series, are marketed as the Ford G6, G6E and G6E Turbo. Other Falcon based models developed by Ford Australia, but no longer in production, are the Ford Futura, Ford Fairmont and Ford Landau, as well as the long wheelbase Ford Fairlane and Ford LTD.

In 1976, film makers Byron Kennedy and George Miller began pre-production on Mad Max, a futuristic police movie. For the film, they needed a vehicle to feature as the "Black on Black, Pursuit Special Police Interceptor' - the sleek, mean and powerful high performance Police car of the Main Force Patrol. Murray Smith was hired as part of the Mad Max crew and one of his tasks was to design and build the Interceptor. The project began with his acquisition of the XB Falcon, mentioned above, and with Peter Arcadipane, Ray Beckerley, and various others, proceeded to modify the car to film specifications. The key modification was the Concorde Show Van front end, roof and trunk spoilers, fender flares and the supercharger equipped with a Scott fuel injector hat ( which was for appearance only and non-functional ). The Concorde front was a fairly new accessory at the time, designed by Peter Arcadipane at Ford of Australia as a showpiece. 1975 Australian Ford Falcon XB GT driving in the 2007 Adirondack Nationals Nationals ( www.adirondacknationals.com ) Friday night cruise in Lake George, NY. A total of 949 XB GT coupes were manufactured, with only 123 being produced in 1975. This particular, genuine JG66, Aussie GT Falcon was imported by the owner in January of 2000 and has been located in New York ever since. There are a few minor modifications made, such as the Hurst shifter ( notice the left hand grip ) and the XY GT boot emblem, placed there in an attempt to quill questions of the type of car it is by Americans not familiar with the model. The chrome bumpers on this GT were factory option that the original owner selected and was comfirmed by Ford Australia.
