DigInfo - www.diginfo.tv The "Rice Planting Robot" now being developed by the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) was chosen as the recipient of "The Robot Award 2008", the grand prize for outstanding performance. The sensors, computer and motor for driving operations are connected with the CAN bus communication standard, and in the future, a consolidated communication protocol will be used to share equipment such as sensors and control equipment with other agricultural robots including tilling and harvesting robots and thereby reduce equipment costs.

Foreign acquisitions of farmland in Africa and elsewhere have become the focus of concern. Many observers consider this development a new form of colonialism that threatens food security of the poor. David Hallam of FAOs Trade and Market Division argues that investments could be good news if the objectives of land purchasers are reconciled with the investment needs of developing countries. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is working together with the EU Food Facility and World Food Programme on a €40 million initiative in Pakistan. Almost 100000 farmers have already received good quality wheat and vegetable seeds, as well as fertilizer, in time for the November planting season. With millions of vulnerable people expected to benefit from increased agricultural productivity, a reduction in hunger and poverty will contribute to a better and more peaceful future.

ROME — Pope Benedict XVI decried the steadily worsening tragedy of world hunger on Monday after a global summit rebuffed a UN call to commit billions of dollars a year for a new strategy to help poor countries feed themselves. The meeting at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization did unite nearly 200 countries behind a pledge to increase aid to farmers in poor countries to help the developing world lessen its dependence on foreign food aid. Only hours after the threeday summit began, some 60 heads of state and dozens of ministers rejected the UNs call to commit $44 billion annually for agricultural development in those nations. The final declaration also omitted a pledge, sought by the United Nations, to eradicate hunger by 2025. Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty, Benedict told the delegates after the document was approved. Opulence and waste are no longer acceptable when the tragedy of hunger is assuming ever greater proportions. The last previous papal appearance at a food summit in Rome was in 1996 by Pope John Paul II. UN officials said roughly 1 billion people dont get enough to eat. As the conference opened, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told participants that it was unacceptable that so many go hungry even though the world has enough food. Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) The change from smaller, more diverse farms to larger single-crop farms in the US has led to greater reliance on pesticides for pest management. Other changes as the US food system becomes more commercialized include: increased use of additives, higher food prices, more water and energy consumption for agriculture, and more pesticide residues entering food through processing. Pesticides have also been used to combat insect-borne diseases, like malaria. The lecture provides an overview of relevant food, agriculture, and pesticide law, and covers the changes in pesticide use as scientific knowledge of a given chemical (ie DDT) improves. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Nepal, with a population of 29 million people, is the poorest country in South Asia and ranks as the twelfth poorest country in the world. Malnutrition levels are alarming and the majority of the citizens have to depend on agriculture for their survival. In response to the poverty, the global food price crisis and the lack of agricultural investment, the European Union established the European Union Food Facility programme (EUFF). Under this programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has overall objectives to prevent immediate hunger, boost agriculture and improve food security. In Nepal, around 106000 extremely vulnerable households are supported in ten districts. Produced by FAO Nepal. Directed by Arnaud Le Borgne. Edited by Pikto Diffusion. Graphism : Espace Studio
