August 3, 2010- Expeditors International of Washington (NASDAQ:EXPD)reported Q2 EPS of $0.42, ahead of consensus estimates of $0.40 per share. Revenues rose 69% year-over-year to $1.52 billion, besting consensus estimates of $1.50 billion. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer commented, "The ultimate testament to the strength of this quarter might be that when the numbers were finalized, we'd actually managed to surprise ourselves by a couple of cents, Having the opportunity to add value to the supply-chains of successful companies is what adds value to Expeditors. We were somewhat awed by the strength that we saw in our customers' supply chains this quarter and we're obviously very grateful they chose to work with us. It was impressive that airfreight tonnage and ocean freight container count this quarter were up 54% and 26%, respectively, compared with the second quarter of 2009. The fact that this quarter's net revenue was actually 5% higher than second quarter 2008 levels was particularly reassuring. While it's much too soon to extrapolate this quarter's results over the remainder of 2010, we think operating above second quarter 2008 levels is a positive development," SmarTrend is bullish on shares of Expeditors International of Washington and our subscribers were alerted to buy on July 14, 2010 at $39.58. The stock has risen 8.5% since the alert was issued.

Morgan Stanley analysts believe that Expeditors International of Washington's impressive results show that the company is once again able to navigate difficult freight markets with more skill than its peers. Analysts William Greene and Adam Longson said, "While there may be some unsustainable items in the quarter (currency, abnormally low costs, below the line benefits, etc.), EXPD's "clean" 2Q EPS is $0.35, at a minimum. However, strong as these results may be, we are reluctant to upgrade after a near-term catalyst, particularly with risk of another peak season capacity crunch that could produce renewed GM contraction. If anything, we think EXPD's results once again reaffirm that fundamentals for air freight are exceptionally strong and we believe the leverage of heavier asset airfreight stocks (AAWW ($54.4), UPS ($61.3), FDX ($77.29)) is still the best way to play." The bank maintained its underweight rating on the stock. Morgan Stanley sees fiscal 2010 EPS of $1.53, vs. consensus estimates of $1.30 per share, and fiscal 2011 EPS of $1.70, vs. consensus estimates of $1.55 per share.
