"It's not about Harvard, it's not about a prestigious school," says Liz Murray of her incredible and uplifting life story, which she shared with an audience at DePauw University tonight. "It's not about that. It's about learning, about educating yourself and gathering enough knowledge to find your way through any little crack or crevice you possibly can so you can move up and escape from that trap you were born into." The 24-year-old Murray, who went from living on the streets of New York City to winning a scholarship to Harvard University, delivered The Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture, "Homeless to Harvard: A Remarkable Journey," in Kresge Auditorium of DePauw's Performing Arts Center. www.depauw.edu

Soloist Tim Grodrian '67 created new lyrics for Gene Chandler's 1961 classic "Duke of Earl" to spoof Rector Hall, a dorm for DePauw University freshman women that's now Rector Village -- with several buildings including a spiritual center. Grodrian traveled to China to perform solo classical music in 2006 at the invitation of the US State Department and Chinese leadership. During student days the solo was performed by the late Jack McWethy '69, who spoofed the university administration and later became national security correspondent for ABC-TV News. Joe Hughes '66 and Ed Williams '69 also were remembered during the 6-14-08 reunion concert on campus at Meharry Hall, where The Men sang as students. "Duke" is followed here by In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, composed by David Mann (1916-2002) with lyrics by Bob Hilliard (1918-1971). Made famous by Frank Sinatra when he used the title for a popular 1955 album which also featured Mood Indigo, another Men of Note favorite in this video collection. Later performances of In the Wee Small Hours came from Carly Simon and John Mayer. Organized in 1962-63 by Dorn Younger '64, The Men of Note became best known for close harmony original arrangements by Younger and his successor, Frank Jacobs '66, of standards from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Other Younger arrangements for the Men of Note include Little Girl Blue, Mood Indigo, Sermonette and How High the Moon. Later Jacobs arranged Autumn Leaves, Every Time I Feel the Spirit and ...

The Ballad of the Monon Bell, which was originally written and recorded by DePauw University alumni in 1985, now sounds better than it has in years and has a new, updated video to accompany the song. A newly discovered stereo recording of Ballad -- written by Darel Lindquist '68 (lyrics) and Nancy Ford '57 (music) and arranged and sung by Jim Ibbotson '69 -- has been married with new photos from the annual football battle with Wabash College, as well as recently uncovered historic images and footage from the rivalry, which dates back to 1890. www.depauw.edu

The exact authorship of Old King Cole is uncertain, but it began as an early 18th Century Celtic nursery rhyme -- morphing into a cadence call used by the US military starting in the 1980s. This version for DePauw University's Men of Note was arranged by Frank Jacobs '66, conducting here, as a student to spoof the military. Its rapid pace, humor, and singers having to remember their short shouted lines made it a favorite among students in the 1960s as well as alumni at this reunion concert in Greencastle, IN on 6-14-2008. Another challenge for the group is maintaining proper rhythm if someone misses their line, as seen here. The rock band Genesis used the Old King Cole rhyme in their 1971 album, Nursery Cryme. Comedian George Carlin joked that when the the old king "called for his pipe and he called for his bowl," he was doing it to smoke marijuana. Nat King Cole reportedly said he based his name on the fable of King Cole, "the merry old soul." More on Old King Cole here: en.wikipedia.org 2009 COLLABORATION UPDATE: Dorn Younger and Frank Jacobs worked together succesfully as students during the Men of Note's early days, but they were not close friends. That changed during the reunion concert of 2004, after the two men saw each other for the first time in 40 years. A new friendship resulted in performances of new choral music written by Younger for Jacobs and his wife, Arlene Harlow '66, sung by children's choruses in cathedrals across Europe. More recently Jacobs ...
