David Yates (born 30 November 1963) is an English filmmaker who rose to mainstream prominence directing the final four films in the Harry Potter series. He helmed the series' fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth instalments, all of which became an instant blockbuster success and made him the most commercially successful British director in recent years. His final picture garnered the highest universal acclaim of the series. Yates' direction of Harry Potter gained him accolades, notably the BAFTA Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing. Yates has revealed that he has ambitions to develop a mix of small and large films and has stated that he has "so many scripts piled up" that are a part of his potential upcoming projects.
He achieved international attention for his award-winning short films early in his career, which led to him becoming a prolific television director with credits including the BBC costume drama The Way We Live Now, the acclaimed political thriller State of Play and the BAFTA-lauded two-part drama Sex Traffic. Due to the success of these dramas and subsequent projects, Yates is considered as one of Britain's most celebrated directors of film and television. His works have displayed realism, political and social themes and his use of hand-held cameras is noted as one of his directorial trademarks.
Yates is married to Yvonne Walcott, who is the aunt of Arsenal football player Theo Walcott.
