Daman and Diu (Gujarati: દમણ અને દીવ, , Portuguese: Damão e Diu) is a union territory in India.

For over 450 years, the coastal enclaves of Daman and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast were part of Portuguese India, along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Goa, Daman, and Diu were incorporated into the Republic of India on 19 December 1961, by military conquest; Portugal did not recognize the Indian annexation of these territories until 1974. Goa, Daman, and Diu were administered as part of a single union territory until 1987, when Goa was granted statehood, leaving Daman and Diu as a separate union territory; each enclave constitutes one of the union territory's two districts.

Marathi, Gujarati and English are the official and main languages. The use of Portuguese goes on declining because it is no longer official nor taught at school, though a number of elderly people can still understand it, some even preferring it for discourse at home. In addition to standard Portuguese, there are two also shrinking Portuguese-based creole languages in Daman (known as Língua da Casa, "Home Language") and Diu (Língua dos Velhos, "Elders' Language"). English is increasingly accepted for official purposes.

Entry from: Diu Town, India Entry Title: "Final days" Entry: "The sky unfurls like an ink stain speckled with pinpricks of light. The sound of the ocean rolls off the beaches and rocks and reverberates like a distant groaning beast while I lay under a thin blanket cradled by the darkness. The sound of the muezzin wafts up the sides of the church where I sleep overlooking the whole of Diu. Dogs bark in distant corners of the town while cats skulk stealthily up along walls disappearing amongst the many trees and palms. Somewhere a puja is happening as the mantras barely discernable in the distance brush against me in my soporific daze. On top of the church roof where I lay the wind comes down in fistfuls bringing with it the chill of ocean and salt. The night broods and I press myself against it for comfort. The heat builds slowly through breakfast as I sit around chatting with the handful of travelers in Diu. Eggs bharji spicy and light, washed down with cold creamy coffee are followed by delicate crepes with lemon and sugar. The topics shift amongst the group providing the same contrast of sweet and savory as the food. As the sun ascends in its zenith trajectory, the heat builds and settles over the island in an oppressive muddled haze of slow movement and sweat slicked skin. The fruit and vegetable ...

Entry from: Daman, Nepal Entry Title: "Daman" Entry: "We stayed in the friendly hill town of Daman for two nights. The town is about 2400 metres above sea level and on a clear day (which we were fortunate to have) it´s possible to see one of the largest panoramic views of the Himalayas in Nepal. On our first evening we went up to the viewing tower and could see a huge section of the range from the Annapurnas to Everest...breathtaking! The next day we went on a small hike down into the valley and enjoyed some of the local specialities! Ben had a game of football with some kids and we relaxed in the sun until the rain came. Daman charged our batteries after the epic journey from Darjeeling and we were ready to hit the capital kathmandu." Read and see more at: www.travelpod.com Photos from this trip: 1. "Daman Valley" 2. Entry from: Diu, Gujarat, India Entry Title: "Diu, Gujarat" Entry: "Diu is a small island just off the southern coast of Gujarat, and was a Potuguese colony until India took it back over in 1961. Diu town is unlike any other place in India, its clean, quiet and the locals are really great. Its kind of like Benaulim, Goa without the traffic, the souvenir shops and the touts hasseling you to buy their ****... The booze here is not taxed ..beer is soo cheap(650ml for $1), whiskey and rum are even cheaper (for the real throat burner its $3 for 750ml). We've found a great little spot to enjoy a couple of beers...which kind of reminds me of the Old Victoria tavern in London ( for all you Parmalat people). We've spent a week enjoying ourselves in this wonderful spot...oh forgot to mention that we had an Air Conditioned room our first in India...AHHH." Entry from: Daman, India Entry Title: "Rural India at last" Entry: "Daman is a small town of about 35000 people on the Indian ocean coastline. It was part of Portugese India as was most of the north west of the country and has quite a large christian population as a result. It is also one of only 2 places in the state of Ghujarah that permit the sale of alcohol. We decided that we deserved someplace nice to stay as we had such little sleep the previous night and were shattered after our trip so we found the Marina hotel and at 585rs (11euros) for a double delux air conditioned room with sattelite tv we found a gem. theres very little of note in the town although there are 2 forts from the portugese time although one is now a school and the other is basically a big wall around a new town. We spent some time here but mostly we planned our next days travel north." Read and see more at: www.travelpod.com Photos from this trip: 1. "Fort of St Jerome" 2. "Harbour" 3.
