Roars from a wild cat over the loudspeakers at the pep rally Thursday warned opposing schools not to mess with the Poynette Pumas. After decades of being the Poynette Indians, the Poynette School Board decided to change the name this year. A Nickname Commite was formed and put options forward. The final two nicknames -- panthers and pumas -- were voted on in grades six through 12 last month. A pep rally on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, was held to announce the winner. By Shannon Green Daily Register A Columbia County Sheriffs deputy sergeant is turning his musical talent into a service to fallen law enforcement officers. "You just want to give back as much as you can," said Deputy Sgt. Richard Hoege. "It comes down to honor and respect." Hoege has taken up bagpipes â specifically the Scottish Great Highland bagpipe â as a way to honor members of his profession. A Reedsburg native, Hoege got his musical start in junior high school with his primary instrument, the trumpet, but he also dabbled in sousaphone, tuba and French horn. In 1998, when he was asked to play Taps for the funeral of an uncle who had been a Marine, he accepted, despite having taken a break from the trumpet during college. "At the time I didnt' even own a trumpet," Hoege said. Read more at www.portagedailyregister.com.

It could be an elephant bone. Then again, it has some characteristics of a mammoth bone. Oxford resident Ken Lessnau said he found it last year in rural Adams County. On Tuesday, he took it to the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County to let archaeologists examine it. Archaeologist Jim Theler took one look at what Lessnau carried into an office at the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County, and declared, "That is a bone. " But whether the 33-inch, 30-pound object is the bone of a long-extinct mammoth, or whether it came from a modern elephant, is one of many questions that Theler, a senior researcher for the La Crosse-based Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, wants to explore in more depth. The structure of the bone, and the appearance of mineralization on parts of it, caused him to speculate, tentatively, that the specimen is the upper humerus from the front leg of a not-quite-mature mammoth. The growth plate on the bone, he said, suggests that the animal was sub-adult. The shape of the bone suggests that it might have belonged to a mammoth and not a mastodon, another extinct elephant-like mammal whose remains are more common in Wisconsin than those of the mammoth. But, based partly on a visit Monday to the Adams County site where Lessnau said he found the bone late last fall, Theler was not ready to rule out the possibility that the bone might have come from an elephant. The site, about two miles of Lessnau's home in Oxford, has railroad tracks nearby. It ...

Flooding from the Wisconsin River has caused some resident to evacuate their homes in Portage, Wis. after hearing news of a levee failing. According to the Associated Press, the levee south of Highway 33 has eroded and is leaking water, but has not completely collapsed. This levee is part of the Caledonia-Lewiston Levee System built in the 1890s, mainly from sand. Kathy Johnson, deputy director of the Columbia County Emergency Management Office said, "The residents down there are used to having high water and dealing with high water a lot, but this could be something that they've never seen, with this amount of water." The river initially flooded after several thunderstorms last week and the National Weather Service expects the river is about 4 feet over flood levels.

By Lyn Jerde Daily Register Hal Kacanek handed out more than 100 cardboard tubes Saturday to early childhood educators from all over Columbia County and invited them to make music. For those who couldnt make a musical note come out of the tube just by blowing over the top opening, a la flute or soda bottle, he offered a hint: Put your mouth over the opening and hum the word didgeridoo. In offering this music lesson â and in demonstrating that a saucepan lid can produce a sustained bell tone, or that PVC pipes can be made into flutes or marimbas â Kacanek demonstrated that children can experience the joy of making sounds with everyday, ordinary things. Sound can take you places, he said, as he demonstrated a herald trumpet made from a piece of pipe. There are a thousand things you can do to make beautiful sounds. Kacanek, a musician and educator from Waukesha, offered the closing keynote presentation at the eighth annual Think Big Start Small Early Care and Education Conference, held at Portage High School. Iowa and Wisconsin, USA endure damaging storms. On Wednesday, July 7, more rains and flooding arrived in numerous counties of Iowa state, many of which had already been impacted by downpours in June. Thousands of acres of crops in Mahaska County were lost, badly affecting already struggling farmers and local economies. Iowa Governor Chet Culver, who travelled to the affected areas to assess the damage, announced that he had applied for 35 counties to be declared federal disaster areas in an effort to help provide assistance for necessary infrastructure repairs. He also commended local leaders and emergency personnel for their aid and support to each other in facing this disaster. Meanwhile, also on Wednesday, the southern and central parts of nearby Wisconsin state experienced thunderstorms with heavy rains and strong winds. Flooding was reported in numerous counties and thousands lost power when lightning struck. At least one tornado was seen in Columbia County, the 16th for the state already this year, which destroyed a number of farm buildings. In cities such as Green Bay, fire, police and public works officials staffed emergency operations centers to assist residents in need of help. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Our thanks, Governor Culver, Iowa and Wisconsin personnel for your active concern and aid to the storm-afflicted. Wishing everyone a smooth return to the regularity of daily life as we strive for greater kindness to ease such extreme events as these.
